The Heart of Engagement: Why Connecting with Peers Matters

In the workplace, we often hear about the importance of engagement—keeping employees motivated, productive, and satisfied. But what if the real key to engagement isn’t just about the perks or the projects, but about something much simpler: genuine human connection?

Engagement is often seen as something driven by metrics and incentives, but from my experience, it’s the everyday interactions and connections with peers that truly make a difference. It’s those moments where you feel seen, heard, and valued by your colleagues that transform a job into something much more meaningful.

Why Peer Connections Matter

Engagement isn’t something you build in meetings or with corporate perks. It’s built in those quick chats over coffee, the shared laughs during a busy day, and the moments when someone really listens to you. When you genuinely connect with your peers, work becomes more than just a task—it becomes a place where you belong, where you feel valued, and where you’re part of something bigger. And this is exactly the purpose of great internal comms.

During my time at former AMR Collection, I experienced this firsthand. I was part of an incredible HR team where we didn’t just work together—we connected on a deeper level. We supported each other, celebrated each other's successes, and created memories that still bring a smile to my face.

How to Foster Genuine Connections

  1. Listen Actively: Instead of just hearing, really listen. When your colleagues talk, show that you care about what they’re saying. This simple act of paying attention can build trust and make people feel valued.
  2. Celebrate the Small Wins: Don’t wait for big accomplishments to celebrate. Acknowledge the everyday wins, like a project milestone or even just getting through a tough day. These small moments of recognition build a positive atmosphere.
  3. Be Yourself: Authenticity goes a long way. When you’re real, it encourages others to drop their guard too. This creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable and can bring their true selves to work.
  4. Reach Out Regularly: Take the time to check in with your peers, not just about work but about how they’re doing personally. A simple “How are you?” can strengthen connections and show that you care about them as individuals, not just coworkers.

During my time at former AMR Collection, I had the privilege of being part of an amazing HR team. This picture was taken during one of our iconic celebrations at Secrets The Vine Cancun, featuring some of the best colleagues anyone could ask for— Gabriela Samel , Karen Bedouret , Carla Macias , Luis Carlos Franco Oramas (Luigi), Luis Ignacio Hernandez R , and myself. We were more than just coworkers; we were a team that truly connected, supported each other, and shared some incredible moments. Great times and even greater memories!
