Heart disease and Stroke

heart disease and stroke are incredibly important health issues, both globally and individually.

Heart Disease:

  • Leading cause of death globally: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for about 18 million deaths per year.
  • Major risk factors: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and obesity are all significant risk factors for heart disease.
  • Types of heart disease: Coronary artery disease, which can lead to heart attacks, is the most common type. Others include arrhythmias, heart failure, and congenital heart defects.
  • Prevention and treatment: Lifestyle changes like healthy eating, exercise, and smoking cessation are crucial for prevention. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of the disease.

Stroke:

  • Fifth leading cause of death globally: Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death globally, affecting over 13 million people annually.
  • Major risk factors: Similar to heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and smoking are major risk factors.
  • Types of stroke: Ischemic stroke, caused by a blocked blood vessel, is the most common type. Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts in the brain.
  • Prevention and treatment: As with heart disease, lifestyle changes are key for prevention. Treatment options aim to restore blood flow to the brain and minimize damage, and might include medication, surgery, and rehabilitation.
