The Heart of a Community: VetSec
There are moments in life that remind us why we do what we do—why we pour our time, energy, and hearts into building something bigger than ourselves. For me, one of those moments happened recently, and I felt it was too important not to share. This isn't just about cybersecurity or career transitions. It's about people. It’s about the community we’ve created here at VetSec—a community that, in times of need, doesn’t just step up. It shows up, in full force, with hearts full of compassion and hands ready to help.
Just yesterday, a member of our VetSec family found themselves in a tough spot. Financial troubles had hit them hard, and like many of us who’ve worn the uniform, asking for help wasn’t easy. It never is. We’re used to being the ones who carry the load, who solve the problems, and who keep pressing forward no matter the obstacle. But this time, the weight was too much to carry alone. They shared their situation with the VetSec community, unsure of what would come next.
What happened after that left me speechless.
The response was immediate. Our community didn’t just hear the call for help; they answered it louder and stronger than I could have ever imagined. Members came together—Donations began rolling in. Before long, what started as a simple ask for a little relief turned into something bigger.
This community didn’t just meet the need; they exceeded it. I mean really exceeded it.
They didn’t do it because they had to. They did it because that’s who they are. That’s who we are as a community. We’re more than a nonprofit. We’re more than a collection of veterans and cybersecurity professionals scattered across Slack channels, Zoom calls, and LinkedIn posts. VetSec is a family, and families look out for each other—no matter what.
I can’t even begin to describe how proud I am to be a part of this organization. Every single day, I’m reminded that this group is special. I see it when someone shares their career win—landing that first job, getting the long-deserved promotion, earning a new certification—and the entire channel erupts in celebration. I see it when someone struggles with imposter syndrome or self-doubt, and within minutes, a half-dozen people jump in with advice, encouragement, and tough love. And I saw it again, crystal clear, when this member needed help, and our community showed up, hearts wide open.
This act of collective generosity speaks volumes about the kind of people VetSec attracts. Sure, we talk about cybersecurity skills, career growth, and breaking into the field, but at the core of it all, we’re here for each other.
Let’s face it: transitioning from the military to civilian life isn’t easy. There are days when it feels like you’re navigating a foreign land, where the customs are different, and the language doesn’t make sense. Add in financial pressures, family responsibilities, or the struggles that come with starting over, and it’s enough to break even the toughest of us. But that’s where VetSec comes in.
We’re here to remind each other: you’re not alone.
It’s something we say often, but every so often, a moment comes along that puts those words into action. This was one of those moments. Our community rallied in a way that I believe would make any one of us proud to call themselves a VetSec member.
What stands out to me most isn’t just the money that was raised. It’s the spirit of it. It’s the idea that, even though many of us are spread out geographically, we’re always within reach of each other when it matters. It’s knowing that a group of veterans—many of whom have never met in person—still operate like a team, looking out for one another as if we’ve been standing shoulder to shoulder our entire lives.
There’s something deeply humbling about that.
For anyone who ever ask for help: I want you to know how brave you are. Asking for help takes a level of courage that’s hard to describe. But I also hope you will see the ripple effect of opening up, how we can remind each other what’s possible when we come together.

For everyone who stepped up: thank you. You embody the very best of what VetSec stands for. You remind me, and everyone watching, why this community matters. You prove that this isn’t just a place to learn cybersecurity skills—it’s a place to find connection, camaraderie, and purpose. You’ve created something real here.
Moments like these don’t just happen. They happen because we’ve built something special together—something worth protecting and growing. And while cybersecurity might be our focus, people will always be our mission.
To anyone reading this who may be struggling: reach out. Whether you need advice, mentorship, encouragement, or just someone to listen, VetSec is here for you. You don’t have to carry it all alone. That’s not how this works. Not here.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: VetSec is more than an organization. It’s a family. No matter how cliche that sounds. And I couldn’t be prouder to call it mine.
If you’re looking for a place where you belong, where people will celebrate your wins, lift you up in your struggles, and have your back when it matters most—welcome home.
We’re here.
