Hearing those terrible words: "You have cancer" (PSA from my heart)

NOTE: I posted this on my personal Facebook page and got a ton of responses from people that this "reminder" got them going back to their doctor/making an appointment. So, I decided to post it here on LinkedIn as well to hopefully spread this important message to even more people who I care about. So, here we go....

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Sadly, that statistic now includes me.

Last month, while going for a regular mammogram, things took longer than usual, and I knew something was wrong. I was then told there were two “suspicious” areas on my right side. I went for a biopsy two days later, which again didn’t look good. A few days later, I got the call that no one wants to hear: “You have cancer.” My life has been a whirlwind since then – many doctor visits (9!), four biopsies (luckily only one problem area), two MRIs, other tests and lotssssss of paperwork!

Despite my current devastation, I am “lucky” as it seems to have been caught early (most likely stage one). I am sharing this news because I want to spread the news to every woman (and to every man who loves a woman/women, and don’t forget that men can sometimes get breast cancer as well) – PLEASE GET YOUR MAMMOGRAM NOW IF YOU HAVE PUT IT OFF (like I did due to COVID last year).

It is so important to get checked annually so that if there’s anything, it can be found early. Many times, you can’t “feel” anything until it gets much larger – so proper screening is a must! I would have never known as I felt fine and didn’t see/feel anything on my body. So, please in honor of me – spread the word to your loved ones too. Hopefully, together, we can help prevent someone else from hearing these sad words or at least ensure they too catch it early.

I am told that it will be a long, crappy journey – but, that all will be well again at the end of it since there are many great treatments available for my type of tumor thankfully. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers over what’s sure to be a bumpy road ahead. There is no doubt in my mind that at the end of my own cancer journey, I will be there to lift up anyone else who needs it on their own future journey too. I am so thankful to be surrounded by so many amazing people in my life – family, friends, colleagues and clients. For that, I feel beyond blessed.

Remember: knowledge and early detection saves lives. Spread the word! XOXO
