Hearing Conservation at Work and Home
Hearing Conservation
At work or at Home, our ability to hear is one of the most important senses we have. People in Construction and Manufacturing understand the hazards of Noise. In Law Enforcement circles, we tend to only think about the hazards of noise when we go to range to shoot. Our noise exposure is far greater than we know. We all need to take percautions to preserve our hearing. Once you damage it, it will not come back. Think about it. When you are running lights and sirens at high speed, how much noise are you taking in. Under stress, our adrenaline starts to pump and things like tunnel vision begin to occur. We have been taught how to minimize their effects by controling our breathing. We talk about Auditory Eclusion. People will tell you the sound of gunfire under stress isn't that loud. It isn't. That does not mean it didn't do damage to your hearing. If you have read this far, entertain me by asking yourself if you have "Ringing in the Ears". This is called Tinnitus. This is a symptom of damage to your ability to hear. I have posted a few articles. One is a link to OSHA, specifically relating to hearing protection. The second is an article about exposure to Firearms noise.
I am proud to announce that I have partnered with Timothy Kearney of 3M. We have had some preliminary meetings and are excited to announce that 3M will offer free training on hearing protection to anyone looking to enhance their current methods.
