Not hearing back from recruiters? There’s a way to change that

“I didn’t get any callbacks even after +1000 applications over? 4 months”. This was the first thing she shared with me in her message (and this is a real story). If you are facing a similar situation in your remote job search and need practical insights on how to change it, please keep reading.

Whoever says job searching is fun is probably lying.

Realistically, I like to say that job searching is a necessary step to move from where you are in your career now to a better place.

It’s a step that, if we make it faster and more efficient, everyone involved will be happier, right?

The problem with aiming for faster results is that people start believing in “magical” solutions.

Job seekers might fall into common mistakes that are often suggested as “ways to land a job in 2 weeks”, including:

  • Applying only for jobs that have the “Easy Apply” button on LinkedIn - because it’s easier, right?
  • Applying to as many jobs as possible, at least 10 per day, every single day.
  • Posting in their LinkedIn feed that they’re searching for a new job, and passively waiting for someone to reach out.
  • Sending direct messages to several recruiters, along with their (unsolicited) resume, asking if there are any openings.

“Magical” solutions don’t exist in the process of landing a new job. Believe me: I’ve worked in the career and recruitment industry for almost 20 years now and have been on the lookout myself,? but haven’t found THE magical trick yet. Instead, I’ve identified one thing that, at least 95% of the time, leads to solid results.

The story of the woman I mentioned at the beginning reminded me of this key principle that often helps job seekers to achieve better outcomes. Over 4 months, she applied to over 1,000 remote jobs and never heard back. Clearly, her focus was in quantity, not quality.

So, if you’re searching for a remote job now, write this down:

The #1 mistake you’re making when you apply to 1,000+ remote jobs and don’t hear back from the recruiter is focusing only on quantity.

Quality matters more than quantity. If you’ve applied to 1,000 roles and haven’t heard back, it’s time to shift your approach.?

Just be careful not to swing too far in the opposite direction. If, let’s say, you only apply to two remote jobs in four months (one job every two months), the chances a recruiter contacts you back are very slim. So, what’s the sweet spot we’re aiming for?

Follow the 5 steps below to increase your chances of hearing back from recruiters for remote jobs:

1 - Instead of “spraying and praying” your resume to every remote job you find, get clarity on your non-negotiable and the must-have elements for your next remote job. Don’t waste time and energy on roles that don’t meet those requirements.

2 - Identify the remote companies you’d love to work from (your? “dream company list”), then build connections with decision-makers at those companies (connect, chat, have a call) even before any roles open.

3 - Quality matters, so tailor your resume for every single company and job before applying (tools like ChatGPT and well-structured prompts can help you save time while enhancing results).

4 - Make sure your LinkedIn profile is complete, optimized and filled with relevant keywords to align with the remote jobs you’re applying for. This will increase the chances of recruiters finding your profile - and you might even be approached for positions that aren’t posted yet.

5 - If you’re feeling stuck, consider asking for help. You don’t need to figure everything out alone in your remote job search.

Securing a remote job takes more than numbers, and it can be challenging - but with the right strategy and mindset, you can transform your approach and see real progress.

Instead of relying on massive volume, focus on the quality of each step you take. I’ve worked with countless professionals who, like you, wanted roles that support their ideal lifestyle, and together, we made it happen. If you’re ready to get started, I’m here to help .
