Hear this: Rest is just as important as work

I honestly had no idea it was Labor Day.

Until my mother asked me what I was doing for the holiday, it hadn't even crossed my mind that the country was taking off yesterday. See, when you own your own business, the lines get rather blurred. There is beauty in that because you can make your own schedule, but if you're not careful, the hustle becomes 24/7/365 and you start to fall out of love doing the work that you once enjoyed.

And that, quite frankly, is dumb.

I haven't quite mastered what sustainable rest looks like, but I know it's important. I know that when I give myself space to rest, I also lend myself to more creativity. I know that when I am rested, I regain focus. I know that when I am rested, I'm a better friend, coach and business owner.

Basically, rest fuels the rest of my life.

God also says that rest is important. Recently, I've been taking a class (or "feast" as our instructor calls it) solely dedicated to the subject of Sabbath. To say it's opened my eyes to God's design for rest would be an understatement. Here are some things I'm learning:

Sabbath is actually a celebration

Sounds ridiculous, right? When I thought of Sabbath, I honestly equated it to slothfulness or just laying around. Not a party. But Sabbath is actually celebrating God's restoration of all things. The entire Bible is one big massive story of creation - marring of creation - and then God's restoring hands. I don't know about you, but I feel He's truly redeeming all things in His time for His glory. And what a beautiful thing to rest in that and celebrate the goodness He has bestowed. What I'm also coming to find is that resting in Him is actually trusting in Him. Though it may be hard at times, it is worth celebrating.
