Healthy Trees are Vital for Livable Communities

My business partner Jenny Gulick and I were honored to be awarded the contract for the City of Boston’s Urban Forestry Plan. It’s a substantial project, and we’re committed to the residents of Boston to make this a effort worthy of this great city. We also applaud the City of Boston for taking this important step!

Trees are a vital component of vibrant, livable communities. And because a majority of tree canopy is located on private land, community involvement throughout is critical to the success of any urban forestry strategic plan. A city’s tree canopy has a direct effect on public health because of its impacts reducing heat stress and improving air quality and water quality. It is especially important, therefore, that community residents have a say in the health and vitality of their urban forest. Boston is being proactive in caring for their tree canopy, instead of just reactive, with a strong commitment to inclusion.

Boston’s urban forestry plan includes a strong commitment to inclusion of all residents. The community will be key in the identify city-wide issues, learn more about the big picture of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, as well as have a hand in setting long term goals for the urban forest. Within the process, priorities will be identified by the community, and recommendations will be made based on the goals set.

Boston Mayor Walsh said, “The 20-year plan will set citywide goals for canopy protection, be responsive to climate change and development, and enhance the quality of life for all Bostonians.” This is the goal of our important work in this historic city, and we are rising to the occasion, excited to work with the city and the community to improve the health and well-being of its citizens. Together, we will work to accomplish what city leadership described; “guide the growth and quality of a thriving, equitable urban tree canopy for future generations.”

If you care about the tree canopy in your city, get involved. Ask your city officials about their plans for caring for the trees in your community!

We invite you to learn more about the value of community trees by reading about what’s in store for Boston!
