Let's face it, we are all affected in different ways from the global Corona virus situation.
On a personal level, my travel plans have been canceled, marathons and events canceled, family trips canceled, conferences and work events canceled, normal life as we know it has changed drastically in both very big and very small ways and the impact is undeniable.
It feels like we're living in a parallel universe where paying such radical attention to handshakes and hand-washing has become totally obsessive and an overriding feeling of "not being in control" is resulting in huge rises of anxiety, stress, pressure and even panic.
I wanted to share some practical ways to maintain a healthy mindset during this period. These tips have saved my life in the past and continue to add huge value to my life every day. My clients will happily endorse that these really work!
These are tried and tested and work if you do. We have never ever been the general manager of the entire planet but we are absolutely the general manager of our own choices. In these complex times, our self leadership, personal power and mastery over our thoughts, habits and choices is essential to our joy and to the quality of our living.
My top tips for becoming an outstanding self manager include:
Spend time each morning in prayer, even a few mindful moments connecting with Gd and your higher spiritual experience.
Meditation is incredibly powerful and effective for creating inner calm, peace and centered-ness. I have amazing apps to recommend.
Workout!
Outdoors or at home, wherever. Make sure you move your body and enjoy the endorphins. Happiness hormones make us feel better! Try it??
Read. Inspire your soul with amazing books, insights and learning. This is the perfect time for some down time. Treat yourself to inspiration. I have amazing recommendations!
Healthy eating! We can't control much out there but we certainly can decide what to feed our bodies. Wholesome nutrition fuels us with vitality & energy!
Rest. Make sure you get enough sleep. Many people are working from home and a change in time management and our schedule often impacts our sleep cycles.
Drink loads of water!
When our daily routine is altered, we tend to forget the little things that often are the big things.
Connect to your vision and goals. Take time to work on your purpose and all the things you care deeply about that you want to accomplish this year. Work on your clarity of direction, strategy and planning. Dedication to your personal and professional growth is always a great idea!
Reach out. We are social beings and this underlying feeling of isolation and disconnectedness is genuinely hard for us. Make time to call or message those you love. Let people know that you care.
Recreation! Bake, cook, sew, paint, draw, knit, build, design - we all complain that there is never enough time to do all the things we enjoy. Since many events and happenings are canceled, let's soak up this precious time to reignite passions and hobbies and favorite interests.
Lend a hand. There are countless ways to make a difference when times are tough. Choose a way to add more meaning to your life. Volunteer, fundraise, support a cause that touches your heart, find out how you can be of service to others. Kindness is the most spectacular force in the world.
Gratitude. Create a personal journal filled with daily gratitude. Count your blessings and focus on all the miracles and wonderful things in your life. Gratitude shifts our mindset and can make the greatest difference to a hard day. This is scientifically proven!
If you are a business owner, use this time to write, blog, reflect on your plans and path of ascension. Nurture your relationships and explore new creative ways to be relevant during uncertain times.
Spend quiet time with your family. Play games, watch a movie, sit around the kitchen table and discuss amazing ideas and dreams together. Family time is priceless. When life is so hectic, we often neglect this most precious tradition.
De-clutter. Use the time to simplify your life and get rid of what you don't use. Donate to charity and make sure others can benefit from anything you are willing to give. A de-cluttered life is nothing short of liberating!
Support your local businesses. I have many friends and colleagues who are losing so much work at the moment. This is scary and heartbreaking. Let's do whatever we can to promote our friends and local businesses so that we can help make sure that everyone is looked after and supported financially.
Pause, and Breathe. Most of us do not know how to breathe correctly. Once we learn how, this makes a massive difference to our bodies and well-being.
Talk and Share. We are not alone and it is completely normal and human to have fear. When we share, we divide our pain and we even double our joy.
And finally, as ironic as this seems, laughter is excellent medicine and is great for our health!
I know that everyone I speak to is feeling somewhat insecure, frustrated and concerned. I know that these tips won't magically dissolve the real difficulty and mix of emotions we are all experiencing.
I do know that they truly do help us feel better and when our insides are charged with spiritual, mental, emotional, social and physical well-being, we are far better equipped with courage, resilience, hope, optimism, faith, thankfulness and a blessed ability to work with what we have, to learn through and from tough times and to find strengths we never knew we had, to bring out our absolute best and to make the absolute best out of a very real challenge.
Challenges change us. Let's leverage this challenge to change us for the better and propel us towards becoming the best general managers of our lives and choices.
