Healthy heart labelling
Wouldn’t it be great if we could look at a food label and be immediately told whether it is heart healthy? ?Maybe a front of pack symbol could be put onto heart healthy foods, which could then help consumers who are heart health conscious to choose the correct foods easily and quickly. The front, back and sides of packaging can be used for information so there should be room for a heart healthy symbol. This would be a fantastic way to see if a food product has healthy fats.
I wonder if supermarkets could have an aisle for heart healthy foods and recipes that incorporate other heart healthy ingredients, bringing together foods that can be found in other parts of the store into one central place to promote heart health. Maybe they could go one step further and have a "heart healthy week" where they provide customers with information both online and in-store, and give coupons and recipes to encourage healthier eating and better informed choices.
The UK government recommends that a woman should have less than 20g of saturated fat a day and a man should have less than 30g a day. Both men and women should have less than 5g of trans fat a day and children should eat less trans-fat and saturated fat per day than adults.
The British heart foundation suggests you look at food labels and packaging to help keep you within recommended daily limits, as it is suggested most people eat too much saturated fat. This is why a heart healthy symbol could perhaps give even more information, especially when our busy lives dictate how much time we have to decide what we choose when we need to grab a bite and go.
