Healthy Dialogue: Policies to Promote Value Based-Care

President Biden’s State of the Union address offered a glimpse of his 2022 health care priorities: narrow the coverage gap, curb exorbitant drug prices and tackle the nation’s mental health crisis.

It’s clear this Administration remains committed to addressing the ever-rising cost of care. And the strategies laid out by the President are a good first step: efforts like extending ACA subsidies and allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices can have an immediate, real-world impact on the lives of everyday Americans.

But, if President Biden truly wants to control the cost of care in the country, his Administration will have to really dig into what makes our health care system tick. And, unfortunately, our system is currently driven by a system that incentivizes more, but not better, care.

That’s why, heading into President Biden’s State of the Union, I sat down with Dr. Mandy Cohen, the former Secretary of Health in North Carolina and incoming CEO of Aledade Care Solutions, to chat about how the Administration’ can drive value for Americans in a health care system badly in need of transformation.

From permanent enhanced marketplace subsidies to Medicaid expansion to integrating virtual care and home health care programs, commonsense solutions have the power to reform a health care system still reeling from the ongoing pandemic.

There is no better time than the present to end the health industry’s addiction to fee-for-service medicine and replace it with a system focused on value. As the pandemic slowly moves into the rearview mirror, we must recommit ourselves to improving patient outcomes through higher-value care.
