Healthy Aging

September is healthy aging month. Since we are all aging, it's a great month to answer the questions below. Being healthy and happy should be a top priority no matter what age you are today.

Are you spending enough time with people you love and enjoy? Are your relationships positive? Socialization is a top factor of happiness.

What does aging mean to you? What words do you use to describe the aging process? If you believe aging is a gift you will have a better perspective on aging and you will feel better as you age.

Can you accept the physical changes? Are you fighting the aging process or accepting? ?Your physical starts to decline but other senses get better such as creativity, confidence, wisdom and experience.?We can shift the physical limitations into new opportunities such as Tai chi, yoga, swimming, walking, etc. If we accept the changes with age and shift to what feels better, we can thrive.

Do you think of food and exercise as medicine? One of the best ways to stay healthy both physically and mentally is watch your diet and get plenty of movement. Your diet affects your mental health as much as your physical. Eat well and exercise.

Are you still curious about life? Trying new things? Taking risks? Variety is an important factor of positive aging. We don't want to feel stuck or stagnate. Try new things, start small. This keeps us growing and expanding.

Do you have a strong sense of religion and/or spirituality. Studies from epidemiological research confirm that spirituality and religion enhances health and well-being. Being part of a religious or spiritual community can provide social support, which is crucial for happiness and mental health.

Awareness – what do we want for the next chapter of our lives? Who do we want to be? Spend our time? We can create what we want each chapter to look and feel like if we take the time to re-evaluate where we are currently, what is working and not working, what we value, what is important at this time of life.

September is the perfect time to refocus on our health goals. It’s amazing how much control we have over our aging process through our daily choices. From staying active to eating nutrient-rich foods, our lifestyle plays a huge role in how we age. What’s one small change you’re making this month to enhance your health and longevity? For me, it’s prioritizing more time for mindfulness and stress management. Small steps can lead to big results!
