ABOUT
The Nutrition and Wellness Summit 2020 hosted by Healthucate Global and with the theme “Nutrition and Innovation for a World without Non-communicable Diseases” presents an opportunity for nutrition, wellness and all healthcare professionals including enthusiasts to learn, broaden and deepen their understanding and knowledge of topics around the prevention and management of nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
NCDs account for 70% of global deaths and 15 million people aged 30-69 die each year from NCDs. Meanwhile 86% of premature NCD deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Four out of every five people with an NCD lives in a low to middle-income country (LMICs) many of which are in Africa.
Nigeria and other developing countries are taking the most hit with mortality from NCDs in Nigeria estimated at 22%. According to the 2018 WHO country profile, NCDs account for an estimated 29% of all deaths in the country.
For too long, the focus of healthcare by most professionals, stakeholders and the government has always been about the management and control of NCDs because many of them are chronic, believed to have no cure, and have to be managed all through the lifetime of the patient though more and more scientific researches suggest otherwise.
With the increasing and worsening prevalence of these diseases, especially nutrition-related NCDs, it does not look like we will win this war against disease. Our lofty SDG goals will remain a dream if we do not take very radical and very different approaches for healthcare and disease management.
Meanwhile, over the years, numerous scientific investigations and research from around the world have shown the efficacy of a whole-food, plant-based diet to not only prevent non-communicable diseases but to potentially reverse them.
The question then is, why does anyone have to die from a preventable and reversible disease?
Why should we still lose millions of lives every year to diseases that could be reversed if the broad spectrum of healthcare and patient-care aligns completely with the emerging scientific evidence?
If we will ever hit the SDG goals, it will require much more than just advocacy but radical action and innovation to address all the problems that our world is confronted with. A lot of global actors are making a difference in the health and wellness space but it is time to pick up the pace and raise more changemakers to innovate for healthcare, solving real problems that can accelerate our progress to achieving the health and wellbeing themes of the Sustainable Development Goals specifically regarding food, health and the planet.
To this end, whether you are a health professional, enthusiast, someone affected by NCDs, or a global actor and voice, we invite you to join us at this summit to learn and discuss these issues in a bid to see how we can better care for the people we serve and create a healthier and sustainable world for ourselves and the generations after us.
