Healthcare's Digital Transformation - A New Hope
What is your point of view on Digital Transformation in healthcare? Have you thought about it?
I heard Jeff Immelt former CEO of GE speak a few weeks back at CIO Works a conference put on by Box. Jeff recounted a story of a discussion with longtime GE client Burlington Northern railroad. GE sells locomotives. In the discussion, GE was made aware that the next locomotive would be bought from the company that could get them from 22 to 23 miles per hour and increases the time on track by 5 days per year. (numbers may be wrong, my notes are hard to read) These numbers would mean an additional $200 - $300 million to Burlington's bottom line.
What does this have to do with digital transformation? Well, in order to keep a train on the track an extra five days a year you have to be able to predict outages. The train and all its parts have to be monitored 7x24. To get from 22 to 23 miles per hour you have to be able to measure wind resistance in different conditions and make adjustments. In short, if you want to get the next locomotive sale at Burlington Northern, you have to be a digital company, not a train company.
A CEO of a healthcare system asked me the question I posted earlier. What is your point of view on Digital Transformation of healthcare? I've thought a lot about it since that lunch.
Jeff Immelt said he had to form the digital company outside of GE because he knew the existing culture would kill it. He went on to say that gave operational leaders goals that they could only attain with the help of digital. This forced them to think differently and involve the digital team. He also had to protect the digital team from the political culture, for they operated very differently. They needed each other but they repelled each other.
Got me thinking. Will digital transformation come from the outside?
That's where I started on my latest series of articles. I'm taking a look at what the next move should be for each of the digital platform companies.

We could be looking at a very different landscape if these companies happen to take the path laid out in these articles.
