Healthcare Tech-not there yet?
David Schenkein, MD

Excellent opinion piece in today's NYT by Dr. Robert Wachter on the issues with healthcare tech today. Worth the read from either the physician or the patient's perspective. Most electronic medical record systems are not user friendly and most patients note their doctor spends their time looking at their screen and not them. Favorite line is the quote from an IBM tech when asked when we will know we have created an important healthcare tech device, "“It’ll be when we have a technology that physicians suddenly can’t live without,” Don't think we are there yet.

9 年I agree with you Meggie but I would add that until we focus on the business need and have a full understanding of the purpose of the solution and its contribution to the patient care, we would never be able as IT to built something effective and useful for the medical team. Successful designs ought to be built to serve a business purpose

9 年Great piece! My theory: until programmers start taking end users perspectives into account usability will not improve because the programmers wrote it from their POV. Iexpounded on it as well on my blog at https://knowledgetobridgethegap.wordpress.com/
