Healthcare is Sick and in Need of a Doctor

When private equity gets hold of healthcare systems, it is literally a matter of life and death.

And this is the current trend: people and corporations other than physicians are owning more and more of the healthcare system in order to profit off patients' problems.

“Private equity firms and their enablers will continue to steal from America’s healthcare system to feed their corporate greed unless we stop them,” Markey said in a release.

I'm glad to see the government stepping in but really it should be us physicians who lead the way to a new and better healthcare system!

But how?

Let me tell you what I am doing:

  • I no longer accept insurance payments. My practice is cash only. Patients pay me directly. You work for whoever pays you and I want to work for my patients, not an insurance company. This way they get 100% of me and none of the bullshit. Plus I don't have to wait weeks to get paid for services rendered (the same way you pay at the time of service when you get your car's oil changed or tires rotated).
  • I make house calls. Yes, it's old school. Yes, it's inefficient. But I don't have a clinic space (and the associated expenses) and I get to see where and how my patients live so I can help them maximize their health by addressing their living situation right at home.
  • Patients love the fact that we can think outside the box and find solutions that align with their values and goals (and also their wallet). When I was working for a healthcare system, I only had access to whatever the system made available to me. Now, I have access to anything and everything for my patients.
  • As a trauma surgeon by training, I can tell you that our healthcare system is really good at fixing problems when they arise in the acute care setting. We have a reactionary healthcare system. Where we fail miserably, however, is in preventing problems from happening in the first place. Which is why I have pivoted to preactionary medicine to help my patients maximize their health and longevity.
  • Patients love having direct access to me. No, they don't blow my phone up. They are very appreciative of the fact they don't have to go through a phone tree, talk to a secretary, leave message, and wait hours for a call back. Problems can be addressed right when they happen or prevented altogether.

I have taken back control over my practice of medicine and my life.

How bad do you have it?

Let's chat if you want to know more about my medical practice or are a physician who is just as frustrated and depleted by the system as I once was and need help to spread your wings.

Are You a Super Hero Dad?

My kids somehow got the idea that Batman was my favorite superhero (he's second, my actual favorite is Frank Castle from The Punisher series but they're took young for that kind of violence).

So naturally, I had to create the Batdad logo and put it up on Etsy.

And for kids, I found these friendship journals are incredible. They go back to the classic old-school friendship journals I had when I was in elementary school.

Especially in today's age where we are surrounded by technology, these books go back to true human relationships and they make a great keepsake for the future. I still have mine from 3rd grade.
