Healthcare - Shared Model Approach to dealing with COVID-19
I think that the COVID-19 pandemic information is moving at a record speed that it makes it difficult to take the time needed to make the best decisions. We all know that for the healthcare system, the three challenges that we face is the lack of PPE, Ventilators, and our healthcare workforce. I think we need to change our model from independent facility care to state-wide care. What I am stating is that every facility is fighting for the same resources, however, the number of admits related to COVID-19 is not evenly distributed across the regions. Most facilities are preparing for the "what if", which I truly support. However, when there is a true lack of resources, we have to prepare for the 'what now". Areas should designate a hospital or hospitals as a COVID-19 facility. This will allow a state to collectively share resources and ensure that the COVID-19 facility has the ventilators and PPE that is needed to adequately treat that population. Secondly, you are not exposing all of your healthcare workers to the virus across multiple facilities. A facility that is selected can start by dedicating a unit to receive all the transfers and then expand beyond that as the # of Admits warrant. This can be localized on a city level, county level or state level. New York and other “hot spot” states shouldn’t feel that they are in this battle solo. Localized placement and care, I think might be the key to preventing the crippling of a healthcare system in major hotspots. It will also position our patients for the best outcomes, while giving our healthcare providers the tools they need to care for the patient as well as themselves. One Nation Under God...
