Happy Friday everyone. There were a ton of layoffs announced in healthcare this week. Let's jump in and break them down!
Layoffs:
?? Crystal Run Healthcare: hundreds of company lab techs were let go without notice in September, following an approved contract for increased pay and better benefits that was set to become effective within days. “We were let go in such a disgusting way and it wasn’t right,” says a former laboratory employee who asked not to be identified. “We were manipulated by our bosses just to be thrown out like trash. ”Optum, which bought Crystal Run Healthcare last year, says the company chose to use Quest Diagnostics for laboratory testing services. The company won’t confirm what locations were impacted by the laboratory changes or any other details of either round of layoffs, but says the cuts best meet the needs of patients and the business. The company has 15 locations in Orange, Rockland and Sullivan Counties which are among 2,000 locations nationwide.
?? Bassett Healthcare: Announced the elimination of around 100 positions. The majority of those positions were administrative, according to the statement.
?? Elevance Health (California): Elevance Health is laying off a combined 123 employees across two southern California locations The insurer is laying off 64 employees at a Carelon office in Cerritos, and 59 at Anthem Blue Cross in Woodland Hills. The layoffs are listed as "permanent" in the state's newest Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) report.
?? Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center (Maine): Around 500 jobs were sold to Compass One Healthcare, a nationwide health care company?that manages two other companies, Morrison food and nutrition services and Crothall support services, Northern Light Health spokesperson Suzanne Spruce said. All housekeeping and cafeteria positions at Northern Light Health are being outsourced to a third-party company, employees learned Tuesday.
?? Government Employees Health Association (GEHA) (Missouri): planning to outsource certain business functions leading to the layoff of more than 450 employees. In the filing, the company said it had made “a strategic business decision” it says will “modernize” its business model by contracting with United Medical Resources (UMR) to provide “customized third-party administrator services.”
?? Pfizer (North Carolina): Pfizer has told 75 employees in Sanford, North Carolina, that their positions have been eliminated. The layoffs come three months after the company axed 150 positions in Sanford following a high-profile phase 3 trial failure for its Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene therapy candidate. The company said the new wave of layoffs is related to the DMD trial results.
?? Takeda (Massachusetts): Massachusetts’ largest biotech employer said in a state filing shared with the Business Journal on Friday that it would lay off workers at its Cambridge and Lexington sites.

?? Marinus Therapeutics ( Radnor, PA): Marinus Therapeutics has hired a Wall Street investment bank to help evaluate strategic alternatives after late-stage testing of a lead new drug candidate came up short. Layoffs planned but no details at this time on the number or positions impacted.
