Healthcare Managers’ Code of Ethics

English Summary

Ethics involves doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong. This is particularly important in healthcare organizations responsible for the health and well-being of society. Patients depend on healthcare workers due to their physical and mental conditions. Healthcare staff must adhere to clinical ethics and patients' rights, avoiding any exploitation of patients' dependency. Clinical ethics requires the establishment of organizational ethics principles in healthcare settings. Organizational ethics encompass professional and ethical behavior rules that must be followed in interactions with patients, families, and staff to ensure their rights. Organizational ethics are based on individual and organizational values such as integrity, honesty, commitment, excellence, loyalty, fairness, justice, accountability, responsibility, and respect for others. Ethical leadership and the promotion of ethical values within healthcare organizations are crucial for fostering a positive ethical climate.

Managers play a key role in organizational productivity and must adhere to organizational ethics principles. Ethical management protects individuals and groups from the negative consequences of poor managerial decisions. Unethical actions by managers, such as underpaying staff, neglecting safety measures, discrimination, nepotism, selling low-quality goods, and tax evasion, may yield short-term benefits but threaten the organization's long-term survival. Ethical managers should uphold social and ethical commitments to ensure the organization's future. Managers must possess the necessary competencies, including managerial intelligence, specialized knowledge, skills, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviours. Ethical principles should be ingrained in the manager's character. Ethical managers serve as role models for staff, and their integrity and values help define and implement the organization's ethical codes. Ethical decisions and actions by managers boost staff morale and productivity.

Developing and ensuring the implementation of a management ethics charter in healthcare organizations is essential. Proposed elements of such a charter include fairness, respect, honesty, support for staff development, accountability, minimizing harm, adherence to laws and regulations, and valuing ethics. Ethical codes should be integrated into the organizational culture and considered in evaluation and accreditation standards. Limited studies on management ethics in Iranian healthcare organizations highlight the need for further research to evaluate adherence to ethical standards and identify challenges and solutions.
