Beyond the Complexities: Identifying Pain Points and Opportunities

Introduction

In last week's edition, we considered the complex landscape of workforce shortages, regulatory pressures and increasing demands facing many healthcare organisations today. This week, we are diving deeper into identifying key pain points and opportunities within organisations to prioritise effectively and foster pragmatic problem-solving.

Recognising Key Pain Points and Opportunities

Begin by acknowledging the critical need for businesses to specifically recognise and prioritise their pain points. The starting point is a structured workshop, or as it can be more aptly termed, a facilitated session. This is a crucial first step in identifying and prioritising opportunities within the organisation.

Importance of Facilitated Sessions

Many have had disappointing experiences with workshops that yield no substantial results. To avoid this, it's important to have key stakeholders present—those who are intimately familiar with the problems at hand. An ideal mix would be leaders and clinicians who can offer diverse perspectives.

Utilising Surveys for Pre-Session Insights

Consider deploying a short survey before the session to gauge the felt frustrations and opportunities. This approach helps set the stage for a productive day, allowing participants to feel heard and thus more open to focusing on future-focused solutions. The session can begin with a playback of survey results to acknowledge current issues before moving forward.

Framing Techniques and Breakout Sessions

Engage in both full sessions and breakouts, using simple but powerful tools like the "5 Whys" technique and design thinking. The "How Might We" framing helps illuminate specific issues and opportunities for solving them, focusing initially more on the 'what' than the 'how'.

Prioritisation with Impact/Effort Framework

Capture and curate the session outcomes and employ an impact/effort framework to prioritise them. Through voting, identify the top three to five critical areas to focus on. Ensure a balance of quick wins and long-term high-value opportunities.

A Good Starting Point

This approach serves as a strong foundation; however, it's important to note that while this high-level plan utilises the 2x2 matrix to outline the 'what', it doesn't yet delve into managing the solution.

It is however important to get clear on the problems and what these ideas or concepts are really solving for.

Next Steps

Stay tuned for the next edition, where we will advance beyond this initial phase. We'll introduce the blueprint for impact matrix designed to guide your organisation in not just identifying opportunities but effectively managing and implementing solutions to drive meaningful change.

By moving beyond the complexities and truly understanding organisational pain points and opportunities, organisations can implement effective strategies that lead to meaningful changes.

Harnessing Behavioural Science and AI to Improve Medication Adherence: A Game-Changer for Healthcare

The ENCOURAGE Randomized Controlled Trial has shed new light on the power of behavioural science and artificial intelligence (AI) in tackling a long-standing challenge in healthcare—medication adherence. This research highlights how behavioural nudges, personalised by AI-driven insights, can significantly increase adherence to prescribed medications, a critical factor in improving health outcomes.

Medication adherence has traditionally been difficult to manage, as it relies heavily on patient behaviour outside of clinical environments. However, this trial demonstrated that behavioural nudges, customised based on psychographic and demographic data using AI, led to a meaningful increase in adherence to statins—a key medication in managing cardiovascular health. Patients who received AI-generated nudges, personalised to their unique motivations and challenges, were more likely to adhere to their medication regimen compared to those in the control group.

The study showed that 66.3% of patients in the nudge group adhered to their statin regimen, compared to only 50.5% in the control group. This significant increase highlights the potential of combining behavioural science and AI to influence patient decision-making in ways that are scalable and minimally invasive.

As healthcare moves toward more personalised and proactive care models, integrating AI with behavioural insights can play a pivotal role in supporting patient adherence and, ultimately, improving health outcomes. This trial is a step forward to the growing importance of leveraging AI-powered solutions to tackle complex human behaviours in healthcare, setting a new standard for patient engagement and support.

Three Leading Behavioural Scientists and their advice on Designing Healthcare Innovations:

To further advance healthcare innovation, Christina Gravert advises that it is crucial to think about behaviour-changing technologies that do not rely on motivation or attention. Attention is increasingly scarce, and motivation is often fleeting. Redesigning basic decision-making environments so that people naturally do the right thing—without needing to think or engage deeply—can be more impactful than relying on motivation alone.

Ingrid Melv?r Paulin says when designing healthcare interventions, it’s essential to have a clear idea of which specific behaviours you aim to change, why those changes matter, and how your intervention will drive them. It’s also important to measure whether your intervention is genuinely helping, rather than inadvertently increasing friction for both patients and providers.

Finally, Katherine Milkman says don't limit your exploration to healthcare alone. Learn from innovations in fields like personal finance, education, energy conservation, computer science, sociology, and materials science. Breakthroughs in these areas may offer fresh insights that can be applied to healthcare, opening new pathways for improving patient care and outcomes.

Advancing Data-Driven healthcare: AI in Healthcare Conference

The upcoming AI in Care conference in Melbourne on November 27th and 28th, 2024, will focus the increasingly important role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. It's a deep dive into how AI is reshaping the industry, providing insights on future trends and exploring strategies for managing the evolution of work and care delivery.

Attendees will have the opportunity to consider questions such as: Are we prepared for these changes? What do these advancements mean for healthcare professionals, organisations and consumers??

Join the conversation to better understand the implications and opportunities AI presents in healthcare.
