CASE STUDIES

Harrogate Convention Centre during the pandemic

Nightingale Hospital

During Covid, we represented Harrogate Convention Centre when it was turned into a temporary Nightingale Hospital.

From handling persistent media enquiries to telling the positive stories of community engagement, and finally, supporting the official opening by Captain Tom Moore.

Liaising with the comms teams at the NHS and the council, we positioned the centre as a beacon during the COVID-19 uncertainty to reassure residents. Work included managing media calls for regional and national media, including the BBC, Sky, and the Press Association.

Harrogate Convention Centre lit the venue blue as part of the nationwide #lightitblue campaign, coinciding with the public campaign to #clapforourcarers. Harrogate fire crews applauded as key workers came out of the centre for the 8pm clap. The moment was captured in an iconic photo by PA photographer Danny Lawson, and broadcast by the BBC nationally, including during the BBC Big Night In charity telethon.

As part of this quick moving project, our MD Clair contacted celebrities Cause UK has worked with over the years and organised video messages of support to thank the NHS, the army, and Harrogate Convention Centre staff. Celebrities included Harry Gration, Bear Grylls, David Gandy, Patrick Stewart, Steve Backshall and Edward Fox, edited by our film associate, Katie Greenhalf.

Genesis Research Trust

Lord Robert Winston, chair of the Genesis Research Trust

Cause UK supported Professor Lord Robert Winston’s research trust to raise awareness of key campaigns in the media.

Such as #IVF40, using the 40th anniversary of the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, as a moment for serious reflection on the commercialisation of IVF, and failures around regulating treatments.

We placed Lord Winston in the Press Association, i news, the Times, Daily Mail and on broadcast media, including BBC Radio Four and ITV This Morning.

For Baby Loss Awareness Week, we interviewed case studies, midwives, scientists, and fertility doctors to put the human stories behind the stats.

Coverage included a news story that was syndicated nationally by the Press Association. The Metro ran a first-person piece with our case study looking at ‘forgotten fathers’, and Professor Winston and a case study couple were interviewed live on Channel 5 News.

What’s Your Mountain?

Ian Flatt in training

?Cause UK provided media support to the Leeds Hospitals Charity for a number of campaigns, including its appeal to build a new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

We told the story of Ian Flatt, who has MND, and his fundraising efforts, achieving significant coverage including Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, Sky News, BBC, and ITV news, as well as extensive newspaper coverage.

We helped tell the emotive story of Jude, who lost her son to MND, in the Yorkshire Post, BBC Look North and BBC radio, promoting her fundraising efforts scaling Ben Nevis.

Cause UK supported a new photo exhibition, ‘7 Stories for MND’, which was hosted in locations across Leeds. We interviewed seven people touched by MND, to help demonstrate its devastating impact, for the exhibition and media. Handling a media launch at Leeds train station, it received widespread coverage, in print and broadcast, helping raise awareness and funds.

Medical innovation

Surfaceskins

During the pandemic, we manged a media launch for a new innovation for the health sector, Surfaceskins, achieving regional, national, and international coverage.

Designed, developed, and manufactured in Yorkshire, Surfaceskins self-disinfecting door pads kill germs and bacteria in seconds. Global demand for the technology boomed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cause UK achieved coverage in The Telegraph, Yorkshire Post and BBC radio. We also secured PA photography; the story went far and wide, appearing in regional newspaper titles across the UK, and digital news platforms including Yahoo and MSN.

Military help Medics

We profiled Kinetic Six, led by former Special Forces soldier Shaun Levy.

After an NHS surgeon asked for help, struggling to communicate under layers of PPE, Shaun’s team created a new radio-comms system for hospital settings.

We got the story on Sky news, BBC regional news, and British Forces Broadcasting (BFBS) which broadcast to over 30 countries, on Navy ships, and online.

Kinetic Six launched KinetiMed on the back of its success – dedicated to providing vital communication tools to the medical frontline when saving lives.

Starry Appeals

Lara Fawcett

We’ve supported countless fundraising campaigns, often with celebrity support, to help raise awareness.

One highlight was a chilly challenge helping to raise over £30,000 for charity.

Cause UK supported wild swimming during #FrostyFeb to raise funds empowering young people to support and rebuild their communities post COVID-19 via the Archbishop of York Youth Trust. Clair, MD of Cause UK, literally took the plunge in the river Nidd, and supported Bear Grylls’ sister, Lara, with her own intrepid challenge; Clair secured BBC Look North, Sky News, Channel 5 News, the Yorkshire Post, BBC Radio York and BBC Radio 2, The Telegraph and The Independent.? All helping to raise awareness and funds for the campaign.

Up Our Street

Lennie Street

A pro-bono pandemic project helped to raise funds for a young social media star, the then 8-year-old Lennie Street, @TunesLennie, for a new special school for Paces in Sheffield.

Lennie has Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus. Despite these challenges, he loved playing the piano and his optimistic tweets inspired many.

Cause UK produced a fundraising film for social media, helping secure celebrities to sing Hallelujah, starring Rufus Wainwright and Jools Holland; we also secured an anonymous donation for Paces from a very famous band from Sheffield!

We placed Lennie’s story in regional and national media, including a live interview on Channel 5 News.

We also directly used the campaign to secure a brand-new piano for Paces, donated by Besbrode Pianos.

Putting the Ah in Spa

Rudding Spa

Supporting Destination Harrogate on their bespoke Health & Wellbeing campaign, we were tasked with securing press trips to the region’s key wellbeing attractions.

We pitched the idea of ‘Doing an Agatha’ inspired by Agatha Christie’s famous disappearance. After a nationwide hunt for the missing author, she was found on the ballroom of Harrogate’s Swan Hotel. The angle was picked up by the Sunday Times ‘Agatha Christie’s Harrogate: the mysterious appeal of the Yorkshire spa town’, and we arranged a packed itinerary including a stay at the spa hotel, Swinton Estates, and experiences at the Turkish Baths and Bettys tearooms.

We also secured press trips, arranged itineraries and secured features in Hello!?Time Out?magazine, the?Guardian?and Prima.
