Experiencing genuine success begins when you realize you are not broken

With so much information available on how to improve yourself, how to change yourself, and how to transform yourself it is easy to think that you are broken, and somehow need fixing, that what you are doing is not working.

The reality is that what you are doing is working.

It is important to understand that the results you are seeing may not be what you want, but there is a process in place that is producing those results. Do we need to change the process?

This is a question posed by countless transformation specialists and coaches who then promptly set out to let us know how broken we are and that the processes we are doing are wrong and generally result in major revamp in our lives.

Is there something much smaller at the heart of significant change, that results in a dynamic shift in our results and success?

Before we can answer that question we should perhaps look at how the results we are seeing turn up in our lives.

There is increasing evidence that what we think about and mull over in our minds for any length of time starts to impact our actions, to such a degree that our actions produce the results we see.

It is not too much of a jump to understand that what we think about comes about, and if we want to be radicle we could say thoughts are things.

The issue is that people generally spend more time thinking about what they don't want than spending time about what they do want.

We use a couple of mnemonics that help us fathom some of this stuff out.

ATFAR is one A - Awareness, T -Thoughts, F- Feeling, A- Action, R-Results

Firstly what we are aware of will lead to a thought, and that thought will lead to a feeling. That feeling determines our actions, and in turn our actions produce the results we see. This process is working all of the time and might lead us to think we are broken, the reality is we are not the process is working, it's the results we want to change, and that can be easily done by reviewing the process in a practical example.

Say we become aware that the market is shifting our costs are increasing and our margins are under pressure.

We have a choice to be aware of a couple of things. We can focus on the increased costs, this may cause us to think about how we can cut costs, or increase prices so the business can at least improve the margins.

As we think about this we have a feeling that cutting costs and increasing prices is the only way we can survive, this leads to actions that result in our product or services being more expensive and having slightly less quality because we have to cut costs.

The results may for a short time improve margins, long term it may well not be the solution. The business may not survive constant pressure on costs. What would you do? Look to see where the process is broken, where you are broken.

On the other side of the equation, we may see the same increase in costs but we control what we want to have happen. So we might turn our thoughts to the expansion of the business.

If we were to perhaps focus our thoughts on this idea, it might lead to the business acquiring another business, a business that compliments the current business. As our thoughts settle on this idea, our actions generally start to follow suit, and perhaps a business acquisition leads to increased margins and better cash flow.

The point to note is that the process of Awareness, Thinking, Feeling, Action, and Results is working. What you are doing is working, but the results are very different if we can control the process.

We are doing it anyway so why not just change the desired result?

People generally struggle to think that this is even possible and become embroiled in the details and quickly move their thoughts to the detail, to the how-to, how would I do that, where would we get the money, etc., etc.

But what would you say to the fact that we teach on how to buy a business with no cash of your own? What are you initially aware of? Would your thought be that is impossible, I have never heard of it.

The process is working you are not broken but your view of this information will determine the results you see.
