As much as we want to believe otherwise, spiritual journeys manifest differently per person. For Ronan Oliveira, it is through his body—the body that allows him to express himself the way he wishes. He now vows to share everything he’s learned in his own spiritual journey of health and fitness with other people.
Currently, Oliveira is Mindvalley’s Head of Health and Fitness and the co-founder of the Mindvalley 10x course and certification Holobody fitness program. He prides himself in his holistic view of fitness—hence the name “Holobody”—but what exactly does that mean?
Redefining Health
Oliveira’s life has always been in pursuit of balance; that yin and yang. He loves the vibrant feeling of being energetic but also the sense of groundedness. As such, he sees health as a balance as well, between the physical, social, and emotional dimensions of human life. Health, after all, does not possess a universal definition.?
From this holistic view, we realize that we form fitness habits not just to incite a physical change but a psychological one as well. Oliveira asks, “Why do I feel the need to change? What is wrong with my body that I feel the motivation to be different?” This isn’t a matter of whether something is right or wrong, but rather a way for us to unpack our motivations. It’s a way for us to see if the fitness goals we set are in service of ourselves, or if we’re unconsciously catering to a societal expectation.?
Fitness for the Fickle
When I asked Oliveira for advice in setting fitness goals on the Ambitious Tribe podcast, he acknowledged that a lot of the people listening—business people, coaches, mentees—were incredibly busy people. So he encourages us to try microworkouts. “Move your body frequently; be in an active state several times a day,” he said. “Try to walk a little bit throughout the day, 5 minutes here and there to break the sedentary pattern.” He added that the aim of microworkouts is not exactly to make you sweat, but to get your blood flowing. When you spend so much time in front of a screen, microworkouts can give you a burst of energy.
It’s also useful, according to Oliveira, to build morning and evening routines to give yourself structure at the beginning and end of each day. “Start with a 5-second morning routine: when you open your eyes, plat your feet on the ground and say to yourself, ‘Let me do great today.” Then build on that—” The idea is to structure the beginning and end of your day according to what you need,” he added.

Gearing Up for Transformation
It seems fitness professionals are dealing with an industry-wide reckoning; many of them have had to pivot once or twice to manage dwindling sales. Oliveira agreed, noting, “The industry is saturated with content and influencer giving the same thing in different packages.”
A way to combat this, he said, is to offer something more long-term. There is value in going beyond the informational level, especially since information on fitness and health is easy to find for free online. Help people go through a transformation not just physically, but also in terms of their identity. Health, after all, is holistic and has a psychological element; physiological changes very often coincide with emotional and social changes. This deeper understanding of health is something Oliveira pushes professionals to offer alongside their trusty fitness practices.?
“People who are providing this are who’s really growing,” he said, “because they’re providing what people really want: permanent transformation.”
