There is no safe harbour without safe towage

Every day, Boluda Towage - a division of Boluda Corporación Marítima - operates in an extremely demanding environment, and for this reason, one of our key priorities is safety leadership.

28 April (2023) was World Day for Health and Safety at Work. To mark this day, the Northwest European organization of Boluda Towage has taken up the initiative to encourage leaders at all levels and in all departments to engage with our crews and ask one question: what makes safe work difficult?

At Boluda Towage, we know our crews are the experts in what we do and are therefore best placed to aid us in understanding what can make it difficult to do work safely, equally, we understand there will often be a difference between work as imagined when staff employees write the operational & safety processes, compared with work as done. It’s therefore vital we give our crews the space to talk openly about how they do their work, and the challenges they face, as well as the natural efficiencies they have found, so we can continuously improve.

Following the excellent insights shared during these open discussions with leaders, we will be reviewing our familiarization program, and considering how fatigue may affect the ability of our crews to perform their work safely.

To further our journey, the Northwest European organization of Boluda Towage?has launched a series of Safety Leadership workshops, which include further developing and improving the standardization of our global procedures and cultivating a positive safety culture. The best practices and good outcomes will be shared within the global organization.

Finally, as a global provider of towage services we work across a diverse network of languages and cultures, we are therefore working to continuously create safety awareness among stakeholders (e.g. customers and nautical partners) to work safely with tugs in ports, for example using safe towage equipment, and improving effective and clear communication.
