Health professionals play a key role in abuse prevention

Health professionals play a unique and important role in sport. They can be a preventive line of defense as well as a trusted source of care for athletes and other participants.??

In their roles, physicians, physical therapists, psychologists, athletic trainers, massage therapists, nurses, dentists, and other professionals can also be crucial allies in recognizing, preventing, and responding to abuse in sport settings.?

The U.S. Center for SafeSport offers an online course designed specifically for health professionals. “SafeSport for Health Professionals” is a 90-minute course that covers:?

  • What to look for before abuse is disclosed, such as conditions that enable abuse and signs and symptoms of misconduct?
  • What to do when abuse is disclosed, including managing disclosures and how to report?
  • How to move forward after abuse has been disclosed using a trauma-informed approach?
  • How to prevent abuse before it occurs, by creating culture change and promoting bystander intervention?

“SafeSport for Health Professionals” is just one of more than a dozen interactive courses offered by the Center. The SafeSport? Trained Core course, for example, is required within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement and is a must-see for anyone with a role in sport. ?
