Let’s dive in!
Is healthcare AI safe? Does it provide value?
AI-driven virtual triage (VT) solutions are reshaping how patients access care. But are they accurate and are they safe?
Continually conducting objective research and scrutinizing the safety and accuracy of VT is one way to ensure that AI solutions are capable of conducting preliminary symptom assessment correctly.
In one peer-reviewed paper, VT technology was rigorously validated against the industry gold standard—Schmitt-Thompson protocols. Both Infermedica and Schmitt-Thompson protocols produced zero critical mis-triage situations, meaning that no emergency case was mistakenly categorized as self-care. The paper also gives evidence to demonstrate that Infermedica's solution is as reliable and safe as Schmitt-Thompson protocols .
The real-world impact of virtual triage solutions is equally impressive. One of our joint studies, published in the International Journal of Healthcare, reveals that 35% of users changed their care-seeking intent after using our tool , highlighting its role in directing patients to the appropriate level of care.?
Moreover, a research paper published in Frontiers in Public Health suggests that in 2 out of every 1,000 VT sessions the outcome led to life-changing decisions , underscoring the importance of accurate triage in critical situations.
Partner case studies further validate the value that virtual triage can bring:
- 85% of nib’s members were navigated to non-urgent care, and 42% of GP visits were recommended to be conducted via telemedicine, ultimately reducing strain on healthcare resources - nib case study
- 86% of TK’s users expressed satisfaction with their symptom assessment, reflecting trust and confidence in virtual triage - Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) case study
While we recognize that there is more development and research needed to improve virtual triage applications, we are proud to relay these positive results that are driving better healthcare decisions and improving patient outcomes across the board.
