Health and Performance: The importance of “alignment”

Most people fall into one of the following 3 categories when it comes to their current health:

  1. Those who know they need a complete overhaul of their lifestyle and are effectively starting from scratch
  2. Those who have tried various things, but nothing seems to stick
  3. Those who are making a concerted effort with their health but aren’t seeing the results they would like

(There are a few who have got it all dialled in and working beautifully - if that's you - I salute you!)

For people in groups 2) and 3) one of the biggest reasons I see for their struggles with consistency or return on their investment is what I call a lack of alignment.

Whilst a lack of physical alignment, poor posture or muscular balance in the body is a common issue and can lead to injuries which can impair progress or bring your plan to a halt, that’s not what I’m referring to today.

The lack of alignment I’m talking about is more about the various aspects of the overall plan.? It comes in a number of forms, but here are some of the most frequent:

  • Exercising hard but not eating in a way that supports their energy levels
  • Managing their nutrition OK, but not doing the types of exercise that will produce the changes they want
  • Following an exercise plan that doesn’t work logistically with their lifestyle - at least not in a sustainable way
  • Following a nutrition plan that's designed for someone else and they don’t actually like many of the meals
  • Neglecting proper sleep, rest and recovery - you can be spinning your wheels and wasting your efforts without improving your ability to recover and adapt
  • Creating a routine that adds even more “bad” stress…when they are already highly stressed!

There are many other more nuanced and personalised examples of course, but I’m sure you get the idea:

If you’re in group 1 of the above, you can save yourself a whole lot of time and effort by ensuring all elements of your health and fitness plan are aligned from the very start.

If you’re in group 2, there’s a high probability that a lack of alignment has contributed in some way to your lack of consistency.

If you’re in group 3, ensuring optimal alignment of all areas of your health could well unlock the result you’ve been looking for.?
