The Health Management Academy Brings Together ‘Record Number’ of Nurse Executives

Arlington, Virginia – August 9, 2023 – The Health Management Academy, a healthcare-focused executive peer learning, research, and leadership development organization, hosted a record number of Chief Nursing Executives during an event hosted by Nursing Catalyst, a nursing innovation collaborative and part of The Health Management Academy.

The virtual event featured a panel discussion with nursing executives who have successfully scaled virtual nursing programs, a key feature of optimized healthcare delivery post-pandemic, within their hospital systems.

"The Health Management Academy has decades of experience engaging nurses at all levels of leadership, and we appreciate the significance of facilitating executive-level discussions,” said Anne Herleth, Nursing Catalyst Managing Director. “Today's record number of attendees to our event on virtual nursing strategy demonstrates that the Nursing Catalyst program has its finger on the pulse of what 140 nurse leaders around the country need to innovate both at a system level and across the enterprise.”

The event, organized and facilitated by Nursing Catalyst Research Director, Lauren Rewers, addressed the fundamentals of successful virtual nursing program strategy, such as defining measurable and system-relevant return on investment, considerations for prioritizing sites for virtual nursing program expansion, and approaching frontline change management.

In the past five years, hospitals have turned over 101.4% of their Registered Nurses, with burnout and increased labor costs cited as major workforce challenges. Virtual nursing gained popularity during the height of the global pandemic among nurse leaders to alleviate the extreme workload placed on the frontline, including nurse managers.

Featured leading health system panelists of the pan-nursing event also included Ryannon Frederick, Chief Nursing Officer, Mayo Clinic, Patricia J. Mook, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Nursing Operations, Education and Professional Development, Atrium Health, Geri Hansen, Director of Enterprise Applications, Nebraska Medicine, and Theresa L. Woodrum, Director Acute Care Specialty Services, Nebraska Medicine.

“This event was one of the best presentations I have attended on the topic,” said Janice Walker, DHA, MBA-HCM, BSN, RN, NEA-BC System Executive Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive, Baylor Scott & White Health.

The Nursing Catalyst program is comprised of health system Chief Nurse Executives, site Chief Nursing Officers, and Nurse Managers, with a shared goal of addressing the biggest challenges to the nursing enterprise through collective problem-solving. Based on The Health Management Academy’s proven track record of engaging nurses at all levels of leadership, the Nursing Catalyst program accelerates innovation by supporting nurse leaders as they pilot innovations in their own units, and by providing executive-level research and idea-sharing to develop disruptive solutions to nursing enterprise challenges.
