Health Equity, Community Building and Wellbeing: Spotlight on Refugee Women and Youth.
Resilience Action International
Resilience Action International is a refugee-led NGO opening in Kakuma, Kenya. Vocational Education, Entrepreneurship.
In collaboration with Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH) and Ipas ,Resilience Action International organized a 4-day training session for community members, pharmacists, Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) champions from local grassroots organizations, and public health workers—including midwives—from the refugee community in Kakuma town.
?
The workshop aimed to equip public health workers in the refugee community with the knowledge and skills to effectively support and educate their patients on family planning, contraceptives, and safe abortion services, particularly for women whose lives are at risk or vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies.
?
Our goal was to build trust and openness between the public, local health workers, and non-profit grassroots health advocates, thereby strengthening the foundation for better healthcare service access and delivery. The event was attended by approximately 30 men and women of diverse nationalities, religion, and professional backgrounds residing in Kakuma refugee camp.
?
Globally, a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes every two minutes, many of which could be prevented with timely and appropriate care. In Kenya, maternal mortality increased by 55% between 2017 and 2020, with 30% of these deaths attributed to complications from unsafe abortions.
?
It is by continuously advocating for and promoting public acceptance of reproductive rights and access to safe health services that SRH champions will steadily prevent health complications and maternal deaths arising from unsafe abortion attempts and harmful cultural practices.
Giving Back to the Community: Handcrafted Uniforms for Primary School Pupils through Livelihood Tailoring Program
Resilience Action International's approach to community development goes beyond mere charity. We seek to create sustainable solutions that address the root causes of poverty and inequality by focusing on skill-building and economic empowerment,. Through the livelihood tailoring program, youths are not only taught a valuable trade but also instilled with a sense of pride and self-worth.
The handcrafted uniforms symbolize the unity and solidarity within the community. Each garment is made with care and dedication, representing the collective effort of individuals working towards a common goal. Through these new uniforms, we hope the primary school pupils will not only feel a sense of belonging but also become ambassadors for positive change in their community as young as they are.
Our initiative to provide handcrafted uniforms for primary school pupils is a testament to our dedication to giving back to the community in a meaningful and sustainable way. Through the livelihood tailoring program, youths are given the tools to create a better future for themselves and their peers, one stitch at a time.

RAI recently hosted a transformative workshop focusing on workplace well-being, mental wellness, and the elusive concept of work-life balance in partnership with Issroff Family Foundation. In a world where the demands of work often encroach upon personal time, we recognize the critical importance of nurturing a healthy work culture that prioritizes the holistic well-being of our staff.
The workshop, spanning four interactive hours, served as a pivotal moment for our teams to reflect on their work habits, stress management techniques, and strategies for achieving equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal life. Our staff engaging in discussions, practical exercises, and insightful presentations were meant to provide valuable insights into the significance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and life outside the office.
At the heart of this workshop lied a profound understanding of the interconnectedness between employee well-being and organizational success. Research consistently demonstrates that employees who feel supported in achieving work-life balance are more productive, engaged, and resilient in the face of challenges.
A healthy work culture, characterized by respect for work-life boundaries and a commitment to personal growth, not only enhances employee morale and retention but also fosters creativity, resilience, and organizational excellence.
