"We don't ask for the tough situations that happen to us, but we are responsible for how we respond and heal through them."
Even if you have not lived through rape, cancer or domestic abuse, chances are you know someone who has. This conversation will give you hope that anyone can heal. We can't change what happens to us, but we can change how we respond. Here's a glimpse into our conversation.
What are the monkeys telling you??
The monkeys that hang around in my head are, I believe, like many people. We question our worthiness, our talent, our skills… all things that affect our confidence and outward presentation to the world around us.
I grew us the oldest of 4 and we all had a pretty typical middle class life, My family has always been a very strong support system, rooted in blue collar values, hard work and a brutal honesty and accountability of all your actions.
Because she held herself to high standards, her expectations of other people were equally high. She didn't know how to reconcile that others didn't grow up with the same work ethic. Her monkeys started telling her to pick up her performance to compensate for scaling back her expectations of others.

How did you manage the monkey messages?
Simply… I kept going. I have been a massage therapist for 20 years, I’ve made my life out of assisting people in feeling better.
So many times, when I couldn’t control other people and just wished that things would be different, the only thing I had was to get up, take a shower, and show up for the clients I had that day. Those clients helped me just as much as I helped them. And while I didn’t air out the things I was going through at the time, to all of them. It didn’t matter. I listened to their stories, the things they were going through, and it gave me a perspective that I wasn’t the only one struggling with life. I wasn’t the only one to go through what I was.
I think we underestimate the power that we have to heal ourselves, by serving others in an unselfish way.
What do you want women to know?
These events don't have to define us. We can heal. Amanda has provided a path as Founder of Sacred Space Integrated Therapeutics, 459 Windchime Place, Colorado Springs. www.sacredspacetherapeutics.com
