HEADS UP- Potential Additional Cost

‘Stand With Production’ (SWP) is a grassroots movement of commercial production workers looking to improve what they claim to be deteriorating working conditions, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.?It’s been reported that the pressure created by the long days and added safety responsibility was extremely difficult for commercial line producers, production supervisors, production coordinators and production assistants. They state they are experiencing:

  • Low pay
  • Unsustainable hours
  • Lack of reasonable rest
  • Lack of employer-funded healthcare and retirement benefits
  • Ineligibility for overtime pay
  • Limited access to safety and training.?

SWP notes these conditions are in stark contrast to other unionized freelance commercial workers such as Directors and craft crew members.??Production team workers felt disempowered to change their working conditions as individuals, resulting in organizing and ultimately being recognized as a bargaining group.

The current indication is that they wish to unionize with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

To date, there is no concrete plan addressing SWP’s issues, so it’s difficult to determine the impact it will have on current production workflow or costs.?The estimated 5,000 line producers, production supervisors, production coordinators, and production assistants represent a significant portion of a bid, from 7% to 20% of the AICP’s total video production bid, depending on the # of shoot days. ?It’s safe to assume there will be a financial impact that will come into better focus after a contract is negotiated.
