Heads up on an old scam

Have you received this or something similar in your inbox lately? I did, today. And I also knew immediately that something was off. I mean, if there are three exclamation marks in a subject line, that's usually a fair tip-off.

While I was tempted to reply with a passive-aggressive, "Wow!!! Tell me more!!", I decided instead to take a quick peek at Takeda Canada's website. Sure enough, I saw this:

Fraudulent Email Alert

Takeda Canada has received reports that certain individuals have received fraudulent emails claiming to have come from Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd., including through LinkedIn regarding job opportunities within the company, including positions in Canada.

Please note that these emails do not come from Takeda as we do not engage in this type of email solicitation. If you receive an email that appears to be from Takeda and you suspect may be fraudulent, please delete it from your inbox.

And, yes, I did reply by pasting  that message from Takeda's website and letting this fellow (if he actually exists) know that I've reported him. I suspect I'll  not be getting that job offer after all.

Have a great day!

Fiona

PS: Just for kicks, I went on this fellow's Linked In profile. Of his 355 connections, 58 of them are named Fiona. Now, what do you make of that?

Ha. True that, Rich!

I make of it that he has great taste in who he targets! Rule #1 for any emails you get - Treat them all like they are from someone who is trying to steal your identity.

What I believe this scam entails Is likely one involving a fraudulent cheque-cashing scheme. Or, it's an identity-theft attempt. Or both. A great resource on common scams is here: https://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/03234.html

Sadly the new era: if people want it, someone will have created a scam. At least there doesn't appear to be a viral link with this one.
