Heads Up, Guys.

Heads Up, Guys.

On the same day I told my dad I got a DUI and was "an alcoholic" (I no longer use that term to label myself), he shared that he'd been diagnosed with depression and was on medication. That was over 18 years ago.

Watching my dad's face change as he shared his truth with me is a memory I'll never forget. I was afraid for him and confused about what this diagnosis meant. But I was in my own personal hell and totally in crisis mode. I'd already quit my job, sold my car, and enrolled in business school. I needed to don my own oxygen mask and I spent the next year working on ME while my dad slipped farther and farther into depression. I try not to feel guilty that I didn't do more for him during that time. None of us knew what to do to help, and I don't believe any of us knew the depths this illness could take him. I know I didn't.

I'm grateful I experienced first-hand how depression changes a person. I understand that it's not something people can "shake off" or "suck up" and while I am a huge proponent of creating a healthy lifestyle, which includes keeping our brains healthy, I have seen how medication can truly support someone struggling, and I believe in a holistic approach to wellness.

Men, in particular, feel the stigma around mental illness and they are at higher risk of suicide than women.

Let's remove the stigma around mental illness. Let's normalize asking for help, talking to our doctors, and seeking therapy and treatment.

Here's a resource I wish had been available when my dad was alive. It could have helped him realize that he wasn't so alone. I hope it helps any of the men here on my LinkedIn know the same. And if you want to talk, I have people in my network I can point you to.

Because no matter where we are and no matter how it feels, we are never, ever alone.

xoS

P.S. I love you, Dad. ??
