MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Jennifer’s legal career began when she was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in November 2019. Her admission to the bar was a milestone in her life as she became the first lawyer in her family. Jennifer’s parents were born in Portugal (specifically, the Azoreans Islands of Sao Miguel and Flores), and did not have the opportunity to obtain an education beyond high school—Jennifer was the first to attend college in her family, graduating with a double major in Business Management and Law/Government as Valedictorian at Regis College, Class of 2016. Jennifer says that having been able to go to law school and become a lawyer has been even more rewarding for her.
Since February 2021, Jennifer has been working in the Mass General Brigham Office for Interactions with Industry (“OII”), which reports into the General Counsel. Mass General Brigham is a nonprofit organization that is committed to patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community. OII oversees, administers, and continually works to refine and improve Mass General Brigham policies and processes relating to the complex relationship between academic medicine and the for-profit biomedical sector. Jennifer balances her workload between two sections of OII: Outside Activities and Research Activities.
As part of OII Research Activities, Jennifer is responsible for ensuring compliance with Public Health Service ("PHS") regulations on PHS-funded research and the research conflict of interest policies of Mass General Brigham/Harvard Medical School. Jennifer works to identify and manage financial interests of Mass General Brigham investigators and Mass General Brigham institutions in connection with institutional academic research activities, in order to facilitate positive collaborations with industry that improve academic research and, ultimately, patient care while ensuring that these collaborations do not cause bias in how the academic research is conducted, and to preserve the integrity of the academic mission of Mass General Brigham hospitals. To date, Jennifer has completed over 700 conflict of interest reviews, and, as part of the process, she enjoys meeting with researchers across the Mass General Brigham hospital system that are working on cures for a myriad of conditions as well as developing innovative technology that will help advance the field of medicine.
As part of OII Outside Activities, Jennifer reviews the outside activities of physicians and staff to ensure they are consistent with Mass General Brigham policy. These include personal consulting agreements, non-disclosure agreements, expert network agreements, speaking engagements, and scientific advisory board agreements, among others. Jennifer advises on a variety of issues involving these relationships, including intellectual property, corporate policies, regulatory matters, and data and privacy. Jennifer helps enable positive institutional and staff collaborations with industry that facilitate Mass General Brigham charitable missions of providing the best patient care, educating the next generation of health care providers, and conducting cutting edge biomedical research.
Beyond the work Jennifer does in OII, Jennifer was elected by the Mass General Brigham community to serve as the Board Chair of the Mass General Brigham Young Professionals Group ("YPG"), an employee resource group at Mass General Brigham with over 1,000 members across the system. The YPG is a group of creative, driven, adaptive, and educated young professionals. The group provides the Mass General Brigham community with networking, volunteer opportunities, career development resources and a variety of events to keep community members engaged and motivated. Before she became the YPG Board Chair, Jennifer was the Career Development Coordinator, where she spearheaded multiple programs, including a resume/LinkedIn workshop, graduate panels, financial planning workshops, and headshot events.
In Jennifer’s current role as YPG Board Chair, Jennifer oversees the general direction and strategic priorities for the YPG. She leads monthly meetings to make sure the YPG is providing opportunities to employees for personal and professional growth. Since becoming YPG Board Chair, Jennifer says the YPG has hosted a variety of events, including volunteer opportunities with the Prison Book Program, National Braille Press, and Special Olympics; an interviewing skills workshop; mindfulness and stress management workshops; and connecting senior leadership with the YPG so members can hear from senior leaders. One of the stand-out experiences Jennifer has had with the YPG was participating in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger in 2023. The event was aimed at raising money to provide food relief to kids and families across Massachusetts. It was Jennifer’s first year participating (and the first time the walk had been held since 2019). She says the YPG proudly raised $1,110. Jennifer is looking forward to participating in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger again on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in Boston as a Heart and Sole Walker, having personally raised over $500. As a team, she says the YPG has already hit their fundraising goal!
Outside of Jennifer’s work with Mass General Brigham, Jennifer serves as the Health Law Liaison for the Boston Bar Association’s New Lawyers Forum and a Member at Large on the Boston Bar Association’s In-House Lawyers Forum. Moreover, as a Barrister Member of Phi Delta Phi ("PDP"), Jennifer provides mentorship to law school students across the United States as part of the PDP Mentor Program. She also serves as a Mentor for the 2024 Suffolk Law Alumni Student Mentor Program and The Legal Mentor Network.
Jennifer maintains mentorship has always been important to her as a first-generation graduate. She enjoys helping others navigate their career in law, whether that begins before law school or at the stage of entering law school, preparing for the bar exam, or considering career paths in the field post-graduation. Without the few mentors Jennifer says she had in law school, she wouldn’t have been as successful. Jennifer has expressed that she wants to continue to be part of programs (like the PDP Mentor Program) that help others navigate the legal profession—no matter what stage in the process.
