Head in sand is not a strategy

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials". - Seneca

Hi Brainbitters,

Welcome to this edition of Rethink: Eve’s Brainbits.

I received several questions on a still often-overlooked aspect of workplace dynamics: The avoidance of confrontation.

The avoidance culture

In many workplace cultures, the avoidance of confrontation is common behaviour. This reluctance often stems from a desire to maintain harmony and not to disrupt the status quo.

However, what seems to keep the waters calm might actually be breeding grounds for misunderstandings, misinformation, and unresolved conflicts.

Avoiding confrontations leads to a myriad of adverse effects, such as reduced productivity, increased employee turnover, and stunted professional growth due to a lack of timely feedback.

The fear of being labelled as 'difficult' perpetuates this avoidance.

Embracing constructive confrontation

Workplace cultures often discourage candid conversations, but there are ways to navigate confrontation constructively without creating chaos.

Encouraging open dialogue, providing conflict resolution training, and fostering a culture of respectful communication are key to transforming workplace dynamics.

By promoting constructive confrontation, organizations pave the way for clearer communication, better problem-solving, and a more engaged workforce.

It's time to rethink our approach and embrace the potential of healthy conflict resolution in the workplace.

Call for action

Now, it’s up to you, time for some self-reflection.

  • Are you attempting to maintain peace in the workplace, and if so, at whose expense? (the latter we often forget ??)
  • Reflect on one instance where you can speak up and address issues to move your team and organization forward.

Always remember, speak up: embracing the discomfort of constructive confrontation leads to positive change.

A message from the author

Thank you for being a part of "Rethink: Eve’s Brainbits." I appreciate your support and enthusiasm. Some of you seem interested in why I am writing it.

During my career as an attorney, I encountered challenges that affect both corporate clients and law firms. These challenges often demand adaptations from organizations and leaders to navigate effectively.

Simply acknowledging these challenges isn't enough; finding valuable solutions is crucial.

Taking on this challenge led me on a journey across renowned business schools such as Oxford-Sa?d, Harvard Business School, Kellogg, and Stanford GSB, seeking answers and solutions to propel your organization forward and to drive positive change.

I categorize it all under the overarching labels of leadership, innovation, and transformation. I address business challenges for organizations and law firms using

Currently, I am still affiliated with Stanford as a Course Facilitator and serve on the advisory council for Harvard Business Review and Forbes.

This journey equipped me with a deep understanding of how organizations and leaders can progress.? Armed with a wealth of knowledge, I strive to make a positive impact and drive organizations like yours forward.

My goal is to empower you and your organization to flourish in an ever-evolving landscape.

We live in an era of rethinking, precisely the reason why I am doing this.

Rethink, Reflect, Revise.

"We transform, You grow."

Yes, a "sin of omission" is the worst leadership flaw. And I see it every day.
