As a Holistic Mindset and Leadership Coach, I firmly believe that effective leadership requires a balance of three essential elements: how we think, how we connect with others, and how we take action. This balance is captured in the Head, Heart, Hands model, a framework that integrates the intellectual, emotional, and practical aspects of leadership. It focuses on:

  • Head: Thinking strategically and making informed decisions.
  • Heart: Understanding and connecting with others through empathy and emotional intelligence.
  • Hands: Taking action, executing plans, and empowering others to achieve results.

When leaders use all three, they create a significant leadership impact and achieve managerial excellence, ensuring that they lead effectively and maximize their team’s potential.

1. Head: Strategic Thinking and Decision-Making

Leadership begins with thinking. The "head" represents the intellectual side of leadership—making strategic decisions, solving problems, and considering the long-term vision. Leaders who lead with their heads are capable of looking at the big picture, evaluating risks, and guiding their teams toward meaningful goals.

Thinking strategically is essential for managerial excellence because it helps leaders make smart decisions that benefit the organization as a whole. A leader who uses their head effectively can anticipate challenges, allocate resources wisely, and align the team’s work with the organization’s vision.

Additionally, the manager takes steps to address any logistical challenges, such as negotiating better pricing with suppliers to give the team a competitive edge. By doing so, the sales manager empowers the team to succeed in their new direction, ensuring that everyone has the tools and confidence to perform at their best.

Leaders who lead with their hands take responsibility for the team’s outcomes. They don’t just set goals—they actively help the team achieve them. This hands-on approach is key to managerial excellence because it ensures that strategic plans are put into action, and the team stays productive and focused.
