He used to multitask in our 1:1s

Now to today's email...

I?worked with a manager who constantly multitasked during our 1:1s.

?

It bothered me to no end.??

?

I promised myself I would never treat my employees the way he treated me.

?

If you're always multitasking during your 1:1s, this email?will help you regain your focus and?start showing up like the best leaders do.?

?

But first... Why is multitasking a bad idea?

?

Multitasking during 1:1s is a poor habit. It's a turn-off and disrespectful to our direct reports.

?

Sure? It’s ok to do it once in a while. However, a manager who?repeatedly multitasks?tells us they're not in control of their time.

?

A chronic multitasking manager sends?unintentional?signals to their employees.?

?

? “This conversation isn’t important.”

??“This meeting isn’t important.”

?

??“Your time isn’t important.”?

?

?“You're not important.”?

?

How can you stop multitasking during 1:1s??

?

One of the best ways to stop multitasking is by designing a distraction-free zone.?This video (1:42)?will show you how to create a distraction-free zone so you can be focused on your direct report. (FYI. This video is from my 1:1 course)

Learning to stay in the present moment is a?core leadership practice. If you want to start growing as a leader, you need to start?cultivating this habit?regularly.?

?

I'm curious. What are your challenges with?staying focused in your meetings? Share them with me. I read and respond to every email.

?

Keep leading,

Ali

One of the most disrespectful things you can do as a manager/leader. Also not effective

The only multi task allowed during 121 with my supervisor/manager/mentor - having great meal at a nice place, that he/she buys! ??

I suggest if someone can’t be present, they do a 1:1 somewhere other than their office!

wow, it amazes and saddens me to hear of managers doing this in a 1-1. Bud sadly nothing surprises me anymore. I certainly hope that pointing this out will give managers who do this a pause and a rethink
