He Didn’t Have To, But He Did…

By Michael Christman

Norman Eugene Shaw

Norman Shaw was born January 3, 1933 near Alluwe, OK. He didn’t have a lot growing up, but apparently, he had what matters most. He isn’t a war hero. His accomplishments are much greater than that.

Norman is my stepdad; My guiding light; The one I turn to when I want to see the truth about unshakable values in full practice, every day, without fail, even when it isn’t convenient. He took me in and raised me as his own. He didn’t have to. He is comfortable standing in the shadows, doing the things that count and receiving no credit. He believes in less talk and more action. He worked on the space program for 30 years, and helped put a man on the moon. I never saw him turn away from helping someone in need. He doesn’t lie. In fact, he has taken uncomfortable truths to great heights, sometimes comical, sometimes not so much. He is one of a kind and a rare treasure.

He begins each day with vigor and a smile. He is driven by purpose; much of it these days has to do with caring for my mother with love and commitment that most of us only read about. He works tirelessly in a little southern town ensuring that our heritage is honored and remembered. He believes our future depends on it. So do I.

I can never repay him for the gifts he has given me. I can only write this post and hope that you will perhaps think about someone that helped shape your character. If you have someone in mind, please call that person today and thank him or her from the bottom of your heart.

Be well, live your values, and remember those who matter most. Happy Birthday, Dad!

Thanks, David. He is also the template for a good friend. His commitments are never seasonal or situational. He comes through, every time. #leadership

Dad is one of those people who pays it forward every day and expects nothing in return. He's one of those guys you get to know and say, "I want to be like him."
