The Course Materials Corner with Dr. Mike Moore

Reflections from UNITE 2024

Thank you to Crystal for covering the CMC for me while I was away. I hope you found her reflections on AI as interesting and impactful as I did. Also please excuse me while I deviate from course materials to talk about something amazing:

I had the incredible personal and professional opportunity to attend the UNCF Institute for Capacity Building sponsored UNITE 2024, UNCF Summit for Black Higher Education, in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, I had the great fortune to personally meet Dr. Ed Smith-Lewis, Dr. Chad Womack, Julian Thompson, and Josh Baron, along with many other amazing people focused on transforming the HBCU experience for students.

Through the celebration, joy, and powerful sessions of the conference, my personal take away from the conference was that it was heavy. Heavy from the historical injustices experienced by HBCUs. Heavy from the cultural significance HBCUs have in the black community. Heavy from the work that still needs to be done to ensure students at HBCUs have access to the same resources and opportunities as students enrolled at other institutions.

Ultimately, I think the heavy feeling I had comes from a recognition that the work done at this conference matters on a deeper level and every person in those breakout sessions and plenaries is going back home refocused and committed to the mission and objective of the UNITE conference.?

Probably the most significant development from UNITE was the official launch of HBCUv, a digital learning and community engagement platform created by HBCUs for HBCUs. I encourage you to read the UNCF official press release, but I wanted to leave you with a great description of HBCUv:

“HBCUv offers shared services opportunities to participating HBCUs, leveraging the individual strengths of participating institutions alongside new resources supported by UNCF and other partners. This includes online course design services rooted in research-based best practices and pedagogical approaches unique to HBCUs. HBCUv will also create a digital “one-stop-shop” model for holistic student support services, deploying evidence-based intervention strategies optimized for the HBCU context…”.

Thank you to our friend, Josh Baron, for opening the door for me to be there and to PIP Founder and President, Lisa March, for the opportunity - it is not one I took lightly.

Looking forward to seeing you in the next edition of The EdTech Pulse.
