Hazardous Waste Management Needs Drastic Improvements
Hazardous waste management is the process of regulating the generation, handling, storage treatment and disposal of waste that has substantial threat to health & the environment.
Improper management of waste generated can cause direct health implications on the community, industry workers and especially the environment.
While the global waste market expected to reach over £10 billion by 2020, the UK’s waste collection market alone currently stands at £850 million. Growth can be attributed to the increasing number of initiatives taken by organisations for the appropriate disposal of hazardous waste, such as local authorities, which are increasing budgets every year.
United Nations rights experts claim that hazardous waste is becoming an ever increasing problem, however. With around 30% of waste generated by healthcare establishments regarded as unsafe, if not managed and disposed of correctly, it can lead to a variety of health and environmental risks.
From a survey of 1273 senior decision makers, we found the general consensus to be rather concerned over their own management of hazardous waste. 91% of our respondents highlighted the need for long term solutions that can efficiently dispose of waste, in the most environmentally friendly and cost effective means possible.
With the UK generating hundreds of thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste every year, our respondents stated that there is a desperate requirement for reliable and trusted collection & disposing services that can provide all the required consignments necessary.
Emphasis was placed on the need for waste management services that specialise in processing all types of hazardous waste, including; contaminated items, toxic materials, medical and pharmaceutical waste. This would allow the 84% of our database, that are actively looking to improve their waste disposal programmes, to switch to better quality and competitively priced companies that can meet their specifications.
The UK is worryingly under-prepared when it comes to hazardous waste disposal and too reliant on outdated procedures. There’s a desperate need for safer approaches to the way in which we manage hazardous waste; one that reduces risk of incidents and can help improve the state of the environment.
