Union calls off Port Talbot strike after Tata Steel threatens to close steelworks early

Trade union Unite has suspended strike action it had planned for 8 July at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant after the steel giant threatened to cease operations at the facility. The company had been planning to shut just one blast furnace by the end of June with the second closing by September as part of its plans to invest £1.25 billion in Electric Arc Furnace technology which would see around 2,800 job losses.

Failed wheel bearing caused train derailment and subsequent chemical spill

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed on 25 June that a rail car’s defective wheel bearing caused the derailment and subsequent hazardous material release in East Palestine, Ohio on 3 February 2023. Investigators said that the derailment occurred when a bearing on a hopper car failed and overheated, leading to the fiery derailment in the centre of the small town.

Explosion damages newly opened hydrogen fuelling station in Germany

A fire broke out following an explosion at a hydrogen fuelling station in near Augsburg, Germany on 26 June, forcing the facility to be closed down just one week after it was opened. The station’s operator, Tyczka Hydrogen, has said the station would remain closed until further notice due to the damage caused. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the blast.

Final investigation report into fatal BP-Husky Refinery explosion released

The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has issued its final investigation report into the fatal naphtha release and fire at the BP-Husky Toledo Refinery in Oregon, Ohio on 20 September 2022, which resulted in the death of two BP employees, who were brothers.

ExxonMobil adds Air Liquide to world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen project

ExxonMobil and Air Liquide have announced an agreement to support the production of low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia at ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas facility. The agreement will enable transportation of low-carbon hydrogen through Air Liquide’s existing pipeline network.
