Fire shuts down Marathon Petroleum refinery, injures two

A fire at Marathon Petroleum’s 596,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Garyville, Louisiana refinery forced the facility to be shutdown on 25 August. The incident happened after two large naphtha storage tanks at the site caught fire following a chemical leak.

US Mine Safety and Health Administration releases results of latest round of impact safety inspections

The US Department of Labor has announced that its Mine Safety and Health Administration completed impact inspections at 15 mines in 12 states in July 2023, issuing 288 violations and four safeguard notices. MSHA began impact inspections after an explosion killed 29 miners at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010.
