Japan will begin releasing the treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on 24 August. The decision to begin disposal comes after an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety review concluded that plans to release the treated water are consistent with IAEA Safety Standards.

An explosion at a coal mine in China’s Shanxi province left 11 people dead on 21 August. The explosion at the Xintai Coal Mine near the city of Yan’an was reported at around 20:30 local time and left several miners trapped underground.

A fire broke out at a fertilizer plant in the city of Bartlett, Texas in the US on 20 August. The blaze resulted in the “total loss” of the American Plant Food Corp. facility, officials said in a statement.

The UK Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA) has changed its name to Fuels Industry UK to demonstrate its evolving remit to champion low carbon fuels as well as traditional petroleum products.
