Hawaiian Women's Suffragist

Hawaiian Women's Suffragist

In 1912, Wilhelmine Kekelaokalaninui Widemann Dowsett founded the National Women’s Equal Suffrage Association of Hawai’i (WESAH), the first suffrage organization in the territory. Born in 1861, Dowsett dedicated her life to advocacy and charity work, and spent her early career working as a treasurer for the Kapiolani Maternity Home to ensure that women and children had access to quality healthcare. As a suffragist, she campaigned for Hawaiian women’s right to vote and was inclusive in her efforts, also advocating on behalf of Asian women’s right to vote as well.??#ISC2Life #ISC2DEI
