Leading electrical engineering company recruits through Staffordshire Jobs and Careers
Finding talent from unexpected places
Shumaila Hisham, a fully-qualified mechanical engineer, was supported by Staffordshire Jobs and Careers to get interview ready after a career break to care for her family. Now she's been snapped by General Electric (G.E. VERNOVA).
Tom Wright, head of Technology Solutions at G.E., said:
"Shumaila joined the Engineering team in December 2023. Her interview attitude was very positive and answered the questions in a structured, logical and concise way even though she had limited experience in the product. This showed real problem solving experience and rational thinking which is key in an engineered to order design team.
Since joining the team, Shumaila has gone from strength to strength, completing 3D training early and then implementing it on challenge after challenge, so far there has been nothing she has not overcome.
Shumaila has meshed into the team well and if I hadn't known previously, I would never have thought she had taken a career break. At just over 6 months into the team Shumaila has now advanced to take on huge sections of the design singlehandedly, she knows when to ask for help and can spot gaps in the process. Really pleased to have you in the team Shumaila, great contributions and I look forward to working together for many years!"
Staffordshire Jobs and Careers also works with a number of different manufacturing and engineering companies, including West Midlands Interchange and a number of small start-ups.

Businesses reminded about firework sales safety
As bonfire night approaches, businesses are being reminded about the importance of safely storing and selling fireworks.
Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards officers will be visiting various premises to make sure safety regulations are adhered to and that fireworks are only sold to individuals over 18.
Sellers must have a licence to store and sell fireworks, and consumers should purchase them only from registered premises. Officers are also advising against buying fireworks from car boot sales, outdoor markets, or on social media.
Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Trading Standards at Staffordshire County Council said:
“This is a particularly busy time for our trading standards officers who are working with retailers to ensure that items are being stored safely and sold responsibly.?
“We do want everyone to have an enjoyable time over the bonfire celebrations but fireworks can be extremely dangerous and there are very strict rules in place to keep people safe.? Only specialist traders are licensed to sell fireworks all year round and others can only sell them at certain times of the year."
Anyone who has concerns about the sale of fireworks should contact Staffordshire Trading Standards on 01785 330356.
