"Having a team is just too much trouble!"
I've heard this or a variation of this a few times recently.
From people who'd been on the receiving end of dodgy behaviour, to not enjoying managing others and finding it time consuming, to worries about meeting payroll...
Is it true? I mean the whole point of growing a team is to free up your time and help your company to grow isn't it?
Well that depends on a few factors...
#1. Are you ready to build a team?
- Do you have some simple processes in place that you can delegate?
- Have you got a documented marketing and sales process that gives you predictable sales? (Which means you will be able to afford payroll/to outsource.)
- Are you mentally and emotionally ready to let go of some control and accept that some things won't be done 'your way'? (But that doesn't mean it couldn't be better ;-) )
- Have you learned a good delegation process to ensure things are done to a high standard without you still having to direct every little thing all the time?
#2. Have you got clarity on who to hire and when?
- Who to hire first? How will they free up your time? In what way will their strengths complement your weaknesses?
- What are the top 1-3 accountabilities that you would judge their success on?
- How is this person going to help you to accelerate your business growth in ways that wouldn't be possible if they weren't there?
- Who is best placed to manage the team as it grows?
#3. Will you and your team be in flow?
Being in a flow state increases productivity and performance, is more fun and reduces stress...
- It's vital to identify what are the strategies, tasks and activities that will have you in flow
- And then to ensure that when you're hiring you're getting a role : natural strengths fit too (and ideally a values/cultural fit too)
Do you think having a team is too much trouble?
Who is somebody you know that has got this stuff on point?
