One of the most common complaints I hear from leaders is “We don’t have enough resources.” Talent shortages, budget constraints, and time pressures are frustratingly common challenges. And with AI and automation transforming industries, it feels like the gaps are only widening.
But what if this isn’t a resource problem? What if the solution isn’t about acquiring more resources?
The way we frame challenges often determines how we approach solutions. If we view resources through a binary lens, we limit our options. It locks us into either/or thinking - either we have what we need, or we don’t. I call it the ‘resourcelessness’ mindset.
What if we rethink the problem differently with Resourcefulness?
Resourcefulness invites us to think differently, creatively, and collaboratively
Imagine you want to bake a cake, but you’re missing a few key ingredients. ?With a “resourcelessness” mindset, you might shelve the idea.
But a resourceful mindset says, “How can I make this work?”
·???????? What can I substitute?
·???????? Can I borrow from a neighbor?
·???????? What if I create something entirely new?
The result might not match the original, but you’ve created something entirely new and delicious.
This same principle applies to business.
Resourcefulness Requires a Shift in Thinking
Reframing the way, we define problems allows us to see hidden opportunities. It’s about embracing curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.
It’s a mindset fueled by:
?·???????? Curiosity: Finding ways to make it work. Ask questions like, What if? How else? Who can help?
·???????? Creativity: Creating with what you have: Find new ways to use what’s available. Look at existing resources and ask, “What can I do differently?”
·???????? Collaboration: Unlocking the collective potential. Collaborate with others - partners, teams, even competitors to co-create value.
Resourcefulness isn’t just a skill; it’s a mindset that disrupts closed thinking. It encourages us to see constraints as opportunities, not barriers.
By reframing 'resourcelessness' to 'resourcefulness', we unlock new possibilities, generate value, and foster innovation.
Researchers from the Journal of Business Venturing describe entrepreneurial resourcefulness as a behavior that pushes boundaries to creatively deploy and reconfigure resources, uncovering unexpected value.
Three Ways to Cultivate Resourcefulness
1.??? Reimagine What You Have:
What assets, skills, or tools are already available? How might you repurpose them in new ways?
2.??? Look for Partners:
Who in your network can share insights, resources, or collaboration opportunities? Resourcefulness thrives on connection.
3.??? Redesign the Rules:
What assumptions can you challenge? Could you trade, borrow, or combine resources differently?
When you cultivate resourcefulness, you disrupt scarcity-driven 'resourcelessness' thinking. You uncover new possibilities, innovate with constraints, and build resilience.
So, the next time you feel constrained and encounter the 'resourcelessness' problem, remember this:
You don’t always need more resources; you need more resourcefulness.

3 天前Where there's a will, there's a way. I recall Richard Branson's story where he was unable to raise finance to change the engines in his aged fleet of aircraft so he pivoted and borrowed far more to REPLACE the entire fleet.
