Provide your thoughts and input on the proposal to adopt the?Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation?(CORSIA) in the UK. The UK government is advancing its efforts to tackle the climate impact of flying by progressing the implementation of the international aviation carbon offsetting scheme, CORSIA). ?
In a consultation launched today (16 December 2024), the Department for Transport unveiled proposals for how the UK will adopt and regulate the landmark scheme developed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). This initiative aims to offset carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions from international flights by supporting projects such as renewable energy installations and reforestation.?
Supporting Decarbonisation Without Burdening Airlines?
The consultation outlines regulatory measures, including penalties for non-compliance, ensuring the scheme is implemented effectively while maintaining a cost-efficient approach for airlines. Aviation Minister Mike Kane emphasised the government’s commitment to achieving net zero and reducing emissions in a way that supports the aviation industry and its economic significance:?
"The UK is already at the forefront of global efforts to address climate change. Carbon pricing schemes like CORSIA play a vital role in decarbonising aviation. With our Plan for Change at the core, we’re helping the UK transition to a cleaner future in the most cost-effective way. We welcome all views on how airlines can continue participating in these crucial initiatives."?
To avoid double-regulation for flights between the UK and Europe under both CORSIA and the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the government proposes measures to prevent unnecessary costs for airlines and passengers. This balanced approach aims to ensure that the UK’s decarbonisation efforts do not unfairly burden the industry or those reliant on-air travel.?
A Global Effort for Cleaner Aviation?
With aviation contributing approximately 3% of global CO? emissions, the UK is among 129 countries participating in CORSIA. The scheme underscores the importance of global collaboration in addressing emissions in an inherently international sector.?
The UK has also extended its expertise to help other nations join the initiative. To date, 11 countries, including those in Africa, have been trained by the UK to implement CORSIA, showcasing the nation’s leadership in global aviation sustainability efforts.?

Tim Alderslade, Chief Executive of Airlines UK, expressed the industry’s commitment to decarbonisation:?
"UK airlines are dedicated to achieving net zero, which requires both innovations to reduce emissions and effective international action. CORSIA plays a critical role in ensuring we can continue delivering for passengers and cargo while taking the carbon out of travel."?
Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), also praised the UK’s leadership:?
"CORSIA is the only global market-based scheme to reduce emissions from international air transportation. The UK, as the third-largest air transport market globally, is playing an essential role in shaping a sustainable future for aviation. We encourage alignment with ICAO standards and the availability of carbon credits to support these efforts."?
Advancing Jet Zero Goals?
The consultation follows the first meeting of the Jet Zero Taskforce, a refreshed group focused on charting a clear path toward net-zero aviation. These efforts align with the government’s broader mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower while supporting high-quality aviation and aerospace jobs across the country.?
Brookfield Aviation International applauds the UK government’s leadership in decarbonising the aviation sector. We understand the critical importance of sustainability for the future of the industry.?
We encourage aviation professionals, airlines, and other stakeholders to participate in this consultation and share their perspectives on how the scheme can be implemented effectively. Your feedback will help shape a sustainable future for aviation while ensuring it remains economically viable and innovative.?
