Have you heard of Wellbeing Burnout?

Each month we share what Health & Wellbeing content has caught our eye, so you can stay up-to-date on what's been happening in the industry.

This month... it's Wellbeing Burnout, where we learn Lessons from Lululemon's Global Wellbeing Report.

In a world where employee wellbeing is more crucial than ever, Lululemon’s latest Global Wellbeing Report sheds light on transformative trends that can reshape our work environments. The findings reveal that when employees prioritise their mental and physical health, they, not only feel better, but also perform better - leading to increased productivity and engagement across the board.

However, the report also highlights a growing concern... “wellbeing burnout”. As organisations promote various wellbeing initiatives, employees may feel pressured to constantly engage in self-care practices, leading to exhaustion rather than rejuvenation. This paradox stresses the importance of balance and realistic expectations around wellbeing efforts.

Some interesting stats:

  • 61% of those surveyed say they experience overwhelming societal expectations to appear well.
  • 53% say there is a lot of conflicting information about the best ways to improve wellbeing.
  • 89% of those experiencing "wellbeing burnout" say loneliness is a contributing factor.

The report underscores the vital role of workplace culture in fostering genuine wellbeing. Organisations are encouraged to cultivate environments that support healthy habits without adding to stress. Flexibility in work arrangements emerges as a game changer, allowing employees to balance their professional and personal lives more effectively.

Access to mental health resources is also highlighted as essential. By investing in these supports, companies can create a safety-net for their employees, enhancing satisfaction and loyalty.

The report champions the idea that a focus on wellbeing isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s a must-have for success in today’s competitive landscape. As we navigate the future of work, we need to prioritise wellbeing initiatives that empower us all to thrive, while also being mindful of the risk of burnout.

EAP and Finding the Right Balance

In the ongoing conversation about employee wellbeing, the choice between in-person and technology-driven support is crucial. While tech-focused Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offer quick and cost-effective help, many employees still crave the personal touch of face-to-face counselling.

EAPs are often misunderstood as crisis-only tools, but they offer much, much more. They provide preventative support that helps employees manage stress, maintain work-life balance, and improve overall wellbeing, leading to higher engagement and productivity.

While concerns about stigma once limited their use, modern EAPs are increasingly confidential, making them more accessible and destigmatised. A recent report from the Employee Assistance Professional Association of Australasia highlights the benefits of digital EAPs, which offer faster access (1.3 days vs. 4.5 days for in-person counselling). However, in-person support provides deeper emotional connection, with most employees preferring a hybrid approach.

This balance between digital and in-person options meets diverse employee needs and enhances workplace wellbeing. As EAPAA President Lana Schwartz notes, continually refining these programs is essential to supporting evolving workforce needs.

A flexible, comprehensive EAP is an investment in proactive mental health care, benefiting both employees and the organisation.

Is Your Workplace Sun Smart?

Skin cancer is a pressing issue in Australia, with over 17,000 new cases expected this year. At Pinnacle Health Group, we understand the critical role that workplace health plays in preventing skin cancer and protecting your team.

Why Skin Cancer Checks Are Essential

High Risk: Skin cancer remains Australia’s most common cancer, with men being particularly vulnerable. Less than half of Australian men use sunscreen or seek shade, and they are nearly twice as likely to die from melanoma as women.

Early Detection: Regular skin checks can catch potential issues early, significantly improving treatment outcomes and saving lives.

What We Offer

Comprehensive On-Site Skin Checks: Our experienced professionals conduct thorough examinations at your workplace, ensuring minimal disruption to your operations.

Are Gen Z Leading The RTO?

Despite their reputation for valuing flexibility and remote work, many Gen Z employees prefer being in the office five days a week. This preference is influenced by their desire to learn, build networks, and gain career visibility, which they believe is harder to achieve remotely. Having entered the workforce during or after the pandemic, many young workers feel that the office environment offers opportunities to observe, learn soft skills, and integrate more easily into professional culture.

In contrast to older generations, who may seek more work-life balance and remote options, Gen Z sees in-person work as essential for gaining career momentum and creating meaningful workplace relationships. This push towards in-office work also reflects their desire for stability and clear professional growth pathways.

However, it's worth noting that this doesn't negate Gen Z's interest in flexibility. They still appreciate hybrid models, but prioritise environments where mentorship and learning are more accessible. Their stance is reshaping workplace dynamics, as companies increasingly balance flexibility with the demands of a younger workforce eager for in-office experiences.

Menopause and the Workplace

In a recent article from the Australian Financial Review, workplace leaders are increasingly recognising that better menopause support could help retain women in leadership roles and boost gender diversity at the top levels of organisations.

Menopause, which affects many women in mid-career, often leads to symptoms that impact their professional lives, such as difficulty concentrating and fatigue.

Without proper support, some women leave or scale back their careers.

By implementing supportive policies—like flexible work arrangements, improved awareness, and access to healthcare—employers can create more inclusive environments. These changes not only help retain skilled female employees but also foster a healthier, more balanced workplace overall.

This trend aligns with broader conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion in corporate health and wellbeing strategies, encouraging companies to rethink how they support various life stages for their employees.
