Have you heard Wawira's story? #5cent

All children are born equal. Equally vulnerable, equally curious, equally capable of achieving greatness. At YGAP, we believe a child's potential to achieve their dreams should be determined by their ambition and willingness to learn, not their social or economic status. Sadly, this is not the case.

Despite education being a basic human right, last year 124 million children were denied access to an education. That’s why this year's 5cent Campaign focuses on inspiring Australians to take action against this major root cause of global poverty by asking them to collect small change to drive big change.

It takes YGAP only a handful of five-cent coins, just $5, to ensure one child receives the fundamental human right of access to a quality education. There’s over $150 million worth of five-cent pieces in circulation in Australia - imagine how many children we could put through school if we rallied to collect them all!

So, what does YGAP do with the money raised?

Our innovative 5cent campaign channels all funds raised to support local leaders with solutions to removing barriers to accessing education in some of the world's toughest communities.  Wawira Njiru is just one of our 215 YGAP Spark* impact entrepreneurs running their own ventures who are making our vision of a world without poverty a reality.

Who is Wawira?

Wawira provides daily lunches to underprivileged children in her local town in rural Kenya, Ruiru, where 30 per cent of children live in extreme poverty. They go to school without breakfast and little to no hope of lunch, leaving them no option but to leave school to work or beg for food to survive. Through her organisation Food 4 Education, she provides these children with the promise of one healthy, nutritional meal per day. Through that promise, Wawira has improved school attendance and the children's grades dramatically. Not only has she helped these children stay in school, she also runs a monthly membership program with local University students and role models, to keep them inspired.

Sign up now at 5cent.com.au. Collect your coins, make a donation, commit to $5 a day for the month of May or simply help YGAP spread the word. In doing so, we can support our impact entrepreneurs provide children with the resources they need to stay in school and increase their capacity to succeed.

Small change. Big impact.
